Tech question...
« on: 26 November 2014, 00:24:57 »

Being totally retarded, I checked our old laptop to check it was running Windows XP... it was...

Have acquired a version of A N Other (not the one that shall not be named) diagnostic software/workshop manual to run on it.

I have three issues...

1. a lack of space... about 15gb short.
2. a lack of internet access... it has IE7 with dial up, not wifi. I need IE8, but it won't accept it from a memory stick.
3. I cannot delete IE7.

Wrt 1. software requires 29gb. Nothing other than installed software on it namely Windows XP Pro, MS office home/student 2007 and IE7.

2. IE7 clearly expects to see a dial up connection. Have tried various things including USB tethering from a phone, connecting the laptop directly to the HH(5?) Using 2 different sockets on the HH. I can get it to show the Internet icon at the bottom of the screen, but open IE and it simply says no connection/working offline. Have tried using various wizards to get it to connect, but being a 2003 machine it predates wifi internet. It does have wireless network capability, but for printing and remote network acccess.

3. no reason other than I have tried and the computer says No, literally...

It's a Compaq Evo N1020v

What are my options?

Software requirements are:

Windows XP Pro SP32 bit IE8
Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate IE8
Windows Vista with IE9 removed/downgraded to IE8

Hardware requirements are:

Internet connection, pref wireless and 30+ gb storage, a dvd drive and at least one usb port.

29gb required, thats shit loads, are you sure about that?. as for the dial up being old Xp should be able to tether with you Mobile (what is it) using a simple Dial Up should work (Dial up number will be *99#) )but you may have set the APN manually in Advanced Settings (Dial Up) or something, if your on a early (guessing T Mobile) Sim then the APN will be (from memory) 'general.t-mobile.uk' if its really old or XP isn't up to Service Pack speed your may need a AT Config string in the as well.

Ok, will retry the tethering :y

Definitely 29gb required, alternative is Web based, so only loads the bare minimum to work, rest is done via internet connection, which will be a complete pita to use :-\

Thinking possibly better off with summat like...

Tethering a no go... if I plug my phone into our desk top, it instanly downloads the software to manage the phone... laptop won't recognised it... wizard keeps asking for phone software disc :-\

Laptop won't scan for wireless devices either... wireless options doesn't provide scanning as an option that I can find/see :-\

Hmm, yea whilst its relatively easy to set up a basic Dial Up (DUN) for a mobile, if you haven't got the Phones Modem drivers at hand bit of a non starter without the Phones Disk or internet connection.

Have you not got an old 3g Dongle or Data Card kicking around, they will have the Set Up,  Drivers and Connection Software on board.

Edit, just another thought, are you sure theres no WiFi on board, a lot of the older style Lappys had a physical WiFi on off switch kicking around on the sides or front of it.

Any good? How much is a reasonable cost for doubling the RAM?

Hmmm, more than I would pay for a laptop 5 or 6 technology generations old

Doubling the RAM in what? That Elitebook? Would need to know whats in it.

It doesn't need to be new, merely effective, but basic requirements are:

Software requirements are:

Windows XP Pro SP32 bit IE8 Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate IE8 Windows Vista with IE9 removed/downgraded to IE8

Hardware requirements are:

Internet connection, pref wireless and 30+ gb storage, a dvd drive and at least one usb port.

That Elitebook has 4GB of RAM and 160GB HDD

Modern variation would be one of these I guess :-\ be predominantly running VIDAS/DICE on the car, so shiny and new isn't exactly a priority as long as it's robust and reliable...

OK, anything is better than that old Evo you have, which came from the P4 era.

A current 4th generation i3 with 4Gb can be had new for around £300 (not in run-up to xmas though normally), and technology depreciates like a, errrr, Omega ;D

 ;D

It was purpose built in 2003 for Mothers job, and designed to run connected to her school network, so unless I nuke it, it won't allow me to delete the non required software to clear space, even if I could make it connect to tinterweb :-\

That said I still have a t mobile dongle (long since disconnected but did at least work in the laptop), that might accept one of my phone sims... might try nuking the hard drive, and reinstall Windows 7. if that works, then with the dongle, I might then be able to download IE8 and install the VIDAS software :-\

A job for later between chocolate and ice cream...

I wouldn't use Internet Explorer even if it meant I'd never ever get Chlamydia no matter what skank I had fun with.
