Oil.How much is too much/little ?
« on: 23 December 2014, 00:03:30 »

Done 7000 miles in my 02 2.2 DTi which is now on 116,000 miles.  Have used 1 Ltr of oil in that time and was wondering whether that was good/bad/indifferent ?

I seem to worry when there is something wrong with the car AND when there isnt.

A litre of oil over 7k miles is nowt to worry over although if it was mine it would have had the oil changed at 5k :y

I would just add that dt,s do use oil to some exstent that is normal, just to put your mind at rest even brand new ones. But i would also recommed changing the oil every 4 to 5 k very important for a dt. Oil does get a battering :y

VW suggest that a litre every 1000 kilometers is acceptable  :o

Being a diesel, ideally you want to change the oil every 3k :)

Mine doesn't burn a drop of oil or coolant...   ...it dumps it on the road instead ::)

DTi's do seem to use a spot of oil. Double checker the crankcase ventilation is clean and the air pipe from MAF to Turbo isn't clogged up with oil as it drips out of the joint and spots onto the alternator...... followed by your alternator expiring...

On the V6's, my 3.2 never uses any but my 2.6 seems partial to a fair drop....

My 3.2 uses a litre between changes, but then it is 270,000 miles old ::)

It's a late 03 plate, so in theory shouldn't be in the reign of the poor valve stem seals, it doesn't exhibit typical valve stem seal failure symptoms either, but does burn oil when you boot the thing hard so I do wonder if it's piston rings on their way.  >:(

I might consider dropping a 3.2 in it in the future (hence why when I fit the LPG kit I intend to ensure it is able to run the bigger engine without replacing major parts) but that is dependant on what the Insurance Company says - This is my daily car which is insured for work purposes.
