Looking to borrow handheld radios
« on: 26 March 2015, 16:17:32 »

This weekend my tri club has it's annual Ironman training weekend and the bike course is in Preston Candover where mobile signal is, well none existant.

I was wondering if anyone nearby has a set of 2-way transeivers we could use to communicate with the various marshalls we have along the bike route.  If not I will buy some, but for just one weekend it seems pointless unless some kind soul out there has some I can borrow ::)

Thanks in advance :y

reason we use them for Motorbike Meets and other Fun Activitys.

If you would be closer i could borrow you them. Hamsphire is just a tig too far away for a quick coffee Drive. sorry

PMR radio's aren't expensive to buy TBH

Check out your local Maplin store and even Argos as they also sell them too.....

Failing them 2, they are readily available in most larger supermarkets like asda and tesco...

Agreed, but as a small tri club we have limited means which would mean I would have to pay for them out of my pocket.  Also, while the majority are a couple of kms away, one or 2 of the Check points are 8km away which would mean the more expensive PMRs and then the costs start racking up.....

It also depends on the terrain that you are trying to cover too...

The cheaper PMR radio's are Ok for about 1Km really, so trying to use them on a wider coverage they would struggle...

The more expensive PMR's also would struggle too...

You could - however - try and contact your local Ham Radio club and ask them if they know who the local RAYNET commander is, as they will have 'proper' radio's, and they would cover the ground for you and relay any info needed, i.e... accidents and emergencies... IIRC they don't charge and it is a purely voluntary contribution they ask for....

for a Distance of 8 km you need a cb Radio Station with a good Areal, a Ham Radio which needs License, or a pair of very good Handheld Walky Talkies.
Mine are not the cheapest and usualy the same type is used by Bouncers and town guys but even they ony reach around 4 to max 5 miles.

I know ::)

I have a little understanding of radio having done the Signals officer's course so I know about propagation, air/ground wave theory, antenna types and usage, etc.

8km is the furthest but not necesarily the most important to have connected by PMR.  There are others which are closer which would be though.  Kev, looks to have a solution that could do the job and he lives around the corner from Preston Candover....fancy that ;D

Hopefully you got something sorted, shame you didn't ask before Wednesday, as I was in Kingsley, Hampshire, Thursday and Friday and could have brought a few 5W Motorola VHF Handhelds on a National Licence with me for you to borrow.   ;)
