In the middle of my firsr garage timing belt

Been at thegarage for 3 months now. Done loads of differemt  jobs. Lots of services, wishbones, springs, clutches(4 so far), pas rack, brakes etc etc

Anyway always being one to throw myself in at the deep end I've never done a cam belt. Well, I have and it was on my omega and that ended badly with cambekt shredding within 20 mins of the job being done  :-[

So obviously never wanting that to happen again we had a belt job come in today on a vw lupo. Or a fox. Or whatever it is.

I'm half way through, stripped the covers off, aux belt off, supported engine, removed engine mount and back in tomorrow to finish it and get a new belt on.

Well. When I say belt. . . That should be plural. It had two. Never seen that design. Anyone know why?

Il get the head dude to watch me do the belt but I'll be doing it all myself. I understand the rough procedure and there's a special tool that's got two prongs to keep cams in line. Didn't really have much time to go in to it t if anyone knows the timing procedure that would be great for a bit of prep and light bed time reading before doing it tomorrow  :y

Heres hoping that you are fitting the full kit and water pump !!,those engines are well renowned for the tensioner pulley plastics breaking up.

I've no idea yet made as the psrts are being delivered.

I trust then that the WP is timing belt driven then?

Any info on the locking procedure, tensioner setting etc?

Vw belts are every 60/70/80k depending on the badge and yes it drives the Wp which will fail at 100k... ::)

 No locks on that motor from memory, it is well marked though so easy enough to do

SWMBO had a Hyundai Lantra, that had two belts. The main drove the cams and the other little one drove a balance shaft.

As per the above, two belts tend to be used where the engine block is designed for an 8V head and then has a 16V one dumped on, consequently an extra belt is added to connect the inlet and exhaust cams.

Other manufacturers use a set of gears to do the same (e.g. the Z19DTH 1.9 CDTI engine Vx/Fiat use, two gears, one with an extra thin spring loaded cog to stop chatter).

Other times you see multiple belts is to drive ancillaries which require accurate crank timing such as fuel injection pumps on diesels (less so these days with common rail but some VW engines, also used in Volvos have this)

Those toothed belts do look a bit lightweight compared to the one on the V6.......
