heater matrix
« on: 01 December 2015, 17:44:34 »

Is it ok to use soda crystals in the heater matrix by disconnecting the two heater hoses and filling matrix with a water and soda crystals and leaving for 20 mins or so to clear out any blockage in there...I found out today from my mate who did the head gasket on my miggy that he thinks that there was some kind of head gasket sealer in the system as he had a hell of a job to clean it off the head and block when he did it,,,.so that may be why i got little heat,,,top heater hose gets hot but bottom one just hardly warm,,,Any suggestions as to which would be the best heavy duty cleaner to use to flush it all out if someone has used....k,seal,,,,or steel seal stuff in it.....rather than replace heater rad...thanks,

Hi

Have you tried flushing it with a hose pipe against the normal flow (backwards)

It any blockage will move then this will help it.

Not tried soda crystals myself but might work to clean but best to put them in the out flow and force the blockage back the way it came in.

I used liquid dishwasher cleaner in mine. That was after spending flushing the matrix both ways several times. I wasn't keen on using a more aggressive cleaner as the heater matrix is aluminium

tried today...got hoses off ok ..but the garden hose i had made up although put into hot water just would not fit onto matrix pipe connections as hose was too small diameter..so going to buy larger bore hose size.(around 5/8 inch i.d  I think ) and make up two more lengths and then try your ideas...will let you know how it goes...thanks.. :y :y

I made these adaptors to make this job easier. Rather than disconnect the heater hoses from the matrix and then struggle fitting a 1/2" garden hose over a much bigger pipe, these fit in the other end of the hoses(at the HBV and engine) and are the correct diameter for the garden hose. My first ones were threaded 1/2"BSP for Hoselock connectors, but this isn't really necessary. The black plug is to block the third open hose.
Hopefully the pic will work, as I've never had any luck posting them:

Up date on my heater no heat problems...it was a nice day today so i decided to give the flushing job a go...bought a one mtr  lenth of 5/8 inch heater hose and 4 jubilee clips  i  cut that in half and pushed the two pieces onto the heater rad pipes..so much easier than trying to push the small diameter garden hose on in a very confined space...then i put the each of other ends over a piece of 15mm copper pipe  and secured with the clips..then i put the two pieces of garden hose into hot water and pushed them onto the pieces of copper pipe which was such a tight fit that they didnt need clips....onto the other ends of the garden hose i fitted the hose pipe connectors ....then i could push fit the main garden hose to each pipe in turn to flush and back flush the matrix several times.....Nick w..suggested using dish washer cleaner which i did and although the water was a bit murky but not very mucky, what did come out was a small ammount ( a thimble full) of what only i can describe as  scale like you get in your kettle........The result is very hot interior heater..so i am amazed that such a small ammount of crap could stop the heater from working...this is long winded i know,,but i realy want to say a very big thank you for the dish washer idea and the garden hose connector idea from you lads on here,,i am now a very happy bunny with loads of heat ,,as usual you are a very helpfull and knowledgeable  crew, ;D ;D ;D :y :y :y

Did you fill the matrix with dish washer liquid and leave to soak and then flush out? If so how long was the soak?
