Has anyone here any experience of Rover 25 or Streetwise driveshaft gaiters or anti-roll bar drop links? Today Emma's car passed its MOT, but with advisories on brake pads, gaiters and drop links. Brake pads I understand, I remember driveshaft gaiters from my Mini owning days 1960-1963, and drop links Omega members know all about. I see on U-tube elastic gaiters that can be forced over the outer CV joint with a spreader or a cone - any tips?

Yes mate...

Drive shaft nut off. Bottom ball joint out. Remove drive shaft from hub. With it still in situ in the gearbox....

Get your stretchy boot. Turn it inside out. Place in freshly boiled water. While that's 'loosening up' grease your cone  . Place cone over end of shaft. Get your boot and in one quick motion (that's important) force the boot over the outer joint. Once on, turn it inside out again. Clamp it with bands using cv boot pliers. Reinstall drive shaft. Tighten nut. Refit bottom ball joint. Done 

Ps the reason I say about one foul swoop for pushing it on is cos they can be tight and if you get it half on and then stop, then try again etc. it won't go on. Animal it on if you get my drift.

Pps, there is a special tool for installing them. But I assume they're quite costly and I've never had a problem with the cone

You fill the joint with grease not the boot.

We use "Shaftec" boots. When you buy do specify that you want the stretchy type

Many thanks, Webby. The gaiters do not look too bad now, but I suppose they look worse on full lock. I gather that testers fail track rods now if the gaiters are splitting.
