why so cheap?
« on: 24 July 2008, 11:26:39 »

can anyone explain to me why omegas are so cheap?bought my first one a couple of months ago(1999 2.5 v6 gls).the bodywork is in excellent condition, few stone chips but no rust or dents.the engine looks like you could eat your dinner off it and it has genuine 44000 miles on the clock.interier is unmarked and everything works as if it were new.got a ton of paperwork with it that suggests its only ever gone to a main dealer regardless of the tinyest problem.the wheels are unmarked with 4 brand new tyres on.have done 1000 miles in it already this week and it drives like it just came out of the showroom.i payed 1200 quid for it,who says there's no such thing as a bargain.i know what cars i'll be buying in the future.

Most people dont want big powerful cars!
Plus they aint the cheapest to run.

In my mind

Omega,
Cheap To Purchase, Medium to insure, Medium-Expensive to run, very fun and comfortable.

Corsa
Expensive to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run, too small, nasty, and no fun.

Over 3 years bet there is not a lot difference in £££ paid out (at my mileages)  But I am a lot happier with the meega!

Folks are very aware of 2 major factors

1. Petrol is expensive and big cars don't do many mpg, mine worked out at 26.27 pence/mile for fuel costs alone

2. RFL (car tax) is shortly to rocket on these big cars, a post march 2001 vehicle will be in excess of £400 a year !!

and minor factors

a. Folks believe that servicing is expensive, parts are hard to get, so running costs are higher

b. I've even been told my tyres are too expensive !!  ok big, decent boots do cost a tad ..

c. Insurance can be high, they are a powerful motor

d. They are big. This puts off a lot of folks who can't drive (park) properly.

All in all IMHO they are now fanatastic value. what was a £30,000 + car just 5 - 7 years ago is now available for £3000 or less

Just sold my 2001 plod 3.2 estate for £1000.
Iam happy with that as it only cost £1400 two years ago.
Spent virtually NOTHING on it in those two years. No cambelt ,tyres, brake pads, just two oil changes.
Omegas can be cheap to buy and to run ..........If you have luck on your side. :y :y :y

Ah -- no-one has told you about the 45000 mile plenum implosion, resulting in total power loss and possible engine bay fire,  then ????  KIDDING !

Seriously tho --- as has been said before --- they aren't the cheapest to run, and in this day and age cheap rules. But you certainly get one helluva lot of car for your money.

Also people who haven't discovered this forum think they cost a fortune to keep in good fettle -- but with the help and guidance from all on here you can save squillions !

big cars were always a bit of a bargain even before petrol got seriously expensive.once they are a few years old there is a small (discerning) market for them partially because the average non enthusiast driver usually seems to think that the most important consideration when buying a car is to have as recent a reg. plate as possible on the front of their car.they also seem to percieve running costs as being more expensive than they actually are.
having said that if you were to buy an oldish omega and simply take it to a vauxhall dealer ,every time it needed some work doing,i suppose the running costs  would be shocking.

A point to make ... did it have the cambelt changed at 40,000 ?? if not GET IT DONE ... the original life was 80,000 and some folks still work to this....  very dangerous .. the belt won't fail but the tensioner bearings might... if they do its probably bye-bye engine .. :(

It is do-able yourself.. there's a DVD in the shop that tells you how.

As a proportion of the value of the car they certainly would be,  but in relation to it basically being a 30 grand car, probably not unreasonable compared to merc/bmw etc. (standard of workmanship is another matter though..)

Another reason that Meegas depreciate so rapidly is that a lot of people think that they have the wrong badge on them. The market that G.M had in it's sights when the Meega was launched Think that the Griffin just doesn't compare with a three pointed star or a bmw, basically snob value, oh how misinformed they were.
