Exhaust smoke
« on: 08 November 2016, 18:24:57 »

Evening All,

Is it normal in this cold weather to notice a bit of smoke bellowing out? Have noticed it recently, hasn't been driven lately and with the cold weather just thinking is this anything to worry about, engine temperature is good, no loss of power.

Any thoughts  :(

Unless your headgaskets are failing, it's just steam from where the exhausts haven't heated up. As long as it stops fairly quickly, there is nothing to worry about.

I left the car running for over a hour, and it only smokes when you apply the accelerator

The V6's [they're the only ones I've experience of ]do smoke a fair bit in cold weather,as NickW says it's the exhausts heating up and burning of internal moisture[especially if they're used on short runs]Keep an eye on coolant level just to be on safe side, but shouldn't be anything to fret over.

Is it smoke or is it steam? At this cold time of year choose a windless day and observe the exhaust water vapour will disipate quite quicky whist oil smoke will hang in the air for quite a while.
