Estates do not like starting when the fuel level is very low, even though they will do several miles past the displayed range.

I agree with the above statment. My estate will strugle to start if the tank is showing below 20 l.

Yes we did try, the car was level and we lifted it from the back passenger side and no difference.

I've never had any issues reference stsrting due to fuel levels, I normally don't run it until warning light comes on so I don't have to worry and like I said it was on 1/4 tank. I'm thinking the crank sensor had been damaged due to all the rain we had and it running down over it when it leaked past the scuttle

As per my post then, if all else on the list made no odds, almost certainly crank sensor... replace with one bought from an actual VX dealer that you actually walk into  :y
