Don't know much about auto boxes or associated systems like 'limp home mode' etc. so need some help, please.
I've just had MOT done at my favourite independent garage and only problem reported was rear tyres. It failed on one and the other was an advisory, so I've ordered two new through Blackcircles. Mileage is 69000 from new and this used to be Wingman's baby, so I know that's genuine.
The appointment to fit is 9.30 tomorrow Friday 12th. but I think that may have to be re-arranged.
The brake pad warning light came on recently but I decided to leave it to see what happened at the MOT, which identified nothing other than tyres. Today I spent hours washing and sprucing it up and then tried to take it for a spin to see if that made it go any faster. Reversed out of the drive OK, but I noticed it felt sluggish and then I noticed the TC light and the engine management light had come on. The button on the dash doesn't affect the TC light but I assume that's normal if there's a fault. It just didn't want to accelerate and would only move when revs were increased considerably. Does this sound like 'limp home' mode and could I drive it carefully some 1.5 miles each way to have the tyres fitted. (Up until yesterday she was going like a rocket when required). I can't see any fluid leakage on a quick inspection but this obviously needs checking ASAP.
I'd like to try to solve this myself even though age, arthritis, general lack of knowledge and time, and too much weight make this a challenge. I still have the urge to wield some spanners if I can manage it.
I'll get some codes over this weekend and will check the fluid level but would appreciate any relevant opinions and suggestions from the experts on here in the meantime if possible.

As has been said on here many times, Bill, as the EML is on, when you get the relevant codes, post them on here, and you will probably get pointers to the fault within a short space of time!

My 3.2 estate has done this on occasion but usually clears after a good rev up. probably no use to you at all but i'd be interested to find out what exactly goes wrong..but I've sold the car now and am waiting for the buyer to eventually collect it.

Post up codes from Pedal trick, but half expecting to see an ABS or Gearbox generated code.

Assume when you say "you spent hours sprucing her up" you hadn't had the hosepipe or any other great amount of water over or around the engine bay ?..if so it might just be excessive moisture which should dry out.

EML will probably have stored a fault code so as has been said post that up for more assistance

Amba.  This occurred to me overnight. I did use the hosepipe, not with the bonnet open, but hosed all the wheels very thoroughly so that might be the answer. I'll try again a little later and report back.

Do the lights on the gear selector accurately follow the gear selection?

Just wondering if some moisture has got into the selector switch.

Sorry for the delay in following this up. Not due to lack of appreciation of help given but to desperate shortage of time.
Anyway, the transmission problem disappeared the following day so must have been due to my drowning the wheels and arches when cleaning too enthusiastically, as suggested by Amba. I've been able to read codes via a cheap reader earlier today and the relevant ones seem to be U2100 and U2104, (refer to vehicle service manual?). I cleared these and they haven't recurred so far, so hopefully there isn't an ongoing problem in this area. I presume these are relevant to the transmission blip. The management light has gone out but flashed briefly, which I presume was the following misfire codes being re-recorded. Thanks for your help and interest.
Other codes are P0300, P0302, P0304 and P0306 which I presume is identifying a problem with the 2,4,6 coil pack which I have suspected for a while.
There are three others which I'm not sure about.
P0155 refers to sensor heater circuit bank sensor 1 and P0150 refers to O2 sensor circuit bank 2 Sensor 1. I don't know what this means. Can someone help with a suggested course of action, please.
Finally P0725 refers to 'engine speed input circuit'. Is this the dreaded crank sensor warning?
I'm currently scouring the maintenance guides but any additional expert opinions would be much appreciated.

I personally would get new pads fitted, then take it for a brisk drive aka Italian tu e up

The 2 U2xxx codes are CAN errors detected by the TCM, and the P0725 is another TCM generated code about not getting engine speed signal.

I would be unconcerned at this time, but keep an eye on codes, particularly for a P0335, which is a crank sensor.  However, I think it was the TCM having a monk on, and now its all dried out....
