Omegas ,car boot sales, and traction control.
« on: 26 September 2008, 18:52:35 »

Went to a car boot sale last sunday. The first one i have been to in a long time.
As most people know parking at a booter consists mainly of a large muddy field.

Ah, ah I thought.....good time to see if the traction control is working on the Omega......so a boot full of throttle with the traction control engaged, and there I was with a blinking red light and very little forward movement....until I eased my foot off the throttle.

Tried it again, this time with a big armful of lock, and what happens, the car does a complete 360 spin. Tried it again same thing happened.

So am I right in assuming, that although the Omega has traction control, it does not have any sophisticated ESP program, or similar. (if it does it ain't working) :o

No animals or children were harmed in the making of this scientific test ;D ;D ;D :y :y

All V6's have TC

Very few have ESP, which was offered as an option on later facelifts

The Omega doesn't have ESP so all the TC will do is ensure that both back wheels rotate at the same rate.

It is actually very good on muddy fields and the like, IMHO, but you need to apply gentle, constant throttle and let it sort itself out. I have gone where 4x4s (crap ones) have failed before.

It can't tell if the car is travelling sideways so won't do anything to stop the back end coming out. In fact, it backs off the power so violently sometimes that it can cause oversteer.

TC is always on - if you press the TC button - TC light comes on indicating that TC is off - might explain your 360  :y

Traction control was developed at enormous cost to to a safety aid to help out the sensible driver in adverse conditions beyond his control.
Not for grown men to play silly bu**ers in a muddy field.
Sounds like great fun. ;D ;D :-* :-*
