car snag ? but not an omega....its a rover
« on: 14 January 2009, 20:39:30 »

i have noticed since the cold weather has gone wet in the morning when i go out in the rover and release the hand brake and go to reverse its like i am driving over a brick then i here a clunk and it returns to normal this only happens on the rear passenger side.

so to day when i used the rover i didnt apply the hand break and the problem had gone. it only seams to be whenthe car has been stood for some time with the handbrake on.
oh their is no other noise or sqeeling from the brakes.

i wonder if its the handbrake sticking??? :-/ :-/ :-/

Std disks at front, std drums at back, nought odd

If you've never done before, follow the omega guide for fronts (different carriers etc, but you'll get it), and I'm sure you'll have no issue with rears (might need to read a haynes from a car with rear drums to see how it should go).

Really just a case of cleaning it up, ensure all free :)

If its drum brakes at back sounds like brake shoe(s) sticking - clean and lubricate should cure!

Might be worth trying gently applying the handbrake while driving a few times in case there is a bit of corrosion on the drum inner after standing, but most likely, if it's been driven a bit since then, it needs a clean and lube.

Copper grease is the stuff. Remove shoes, clean and reassemble with a little copper grease where they contact the back plate, under the shoe retaining clips and also on the handbrake lever mechanism and where the self-adjuster meets the shoes.

Don't go mad with it in case it gets on the friction material or picks up excess brake dust.

Take a peek under the slave cylinder dust covers while you're there in case they are leaking.

your too good guys. :)

its just started to rain here so looks like i am going to have to wait

 :'(

thought i would see what happens if i only applied the hand brake softly and it doesnt do it.

heres hoping its just a build up of rust and dirt.

plz stop raining

Might be worth checking anyway, as it can be a pain if it decides to sieze properly at an inopportune moment, as a colleague of mine once found. :-X
