got home from work to a missus complaining about a ticking noise in the wall, traced it to the airing cupboard containing the hot water cylinder.
the noise appears to be coming from this device:-

any ideas what it is/does?

thats the control valve,electronic valve, try re tightning the nuts on the valve,if that dont work you can buy one from b&q or plumb center

Ticks    No -- seriously, have no idea.  Could the ticking be the expansion / contraction caused by heat changes ( my radiators tick when they come on as they warm up )  :-?

Is the system still working ok?

The ticking may be a sign that the motorised valve/s are nearing the end.
Motorised valves 'sometimes' have replaceable 'syncron' motors (housed in the 'shiny-boxy' bit) if so then they can be swapped for new, without draining-down the system, if not, then you`ll need to drain down the system and fit new (complete) 2-port motorised valves.
Get the part number of the valve-head and trot down to the plumber`s merchant and throw yourself on their mercy.

P.S: That wiring connection box on the wall is VERY dangerous with the cover off....it`s all 240 volt in there!

That is a motorised zone valve.It operates when your hot water or central heating is 'calling 'for heat (or not in other words it is opening and closing a valve to let hot water through.There is inside it a small 'syncro motor' driving a cog which turns the valve,they wear out and somtimes just 'grind'
The motor is easily replaced,just a couple of screws but a bit fiddly.

Alternatively you may just have a random piece of grit,or more likely solder,caught up in there which will eventually go away somewhere else.

My system looks  a tad different as I have a 3 way valve ... but as Debs says .. the control/motor bits are removeable from the actual valve, and can be purchased seperately. As you don't touch the "wet" side of the system they are very easy to change ... took me less than 1/2  an hour

Thanks for all the replies but 20 minutes after my original post the noise stopped!
And it has'nt started since, i'll look at the motorised valves and if it happens again i'll buy some new ones

There Honeywell ones so plenty of spares available.

If they are Honywell V4043H I bought one on Ebay for £16.00
plumbers want over £40.00. List price I think is £70.00

I had to change the whole thing old versions did not have a motor / head that could be changed.
