My 406 TD - clutch is juddering badly (engine mounts seem OK) and slipping under load, so I really do need to fix it.

Haynes says that the gearbox can be removed with the engine in-situ, but in my experience with FWD cars, space is so limited that you'd probably snag the splines on the pressure plate when re-fitting.

Therefore - engine removal probably best, and seperate transmission when the whole lump is out? It's not really much more work to get the engine out, once the driveshafts are off....

Any thoughts?

Local garage has quoted about £300 to do the job, and as much as it's against my religion, I may have to pay them to do it, purely because it's just way too horrible and unpredictable outside right now  :-/

I'd prefer not to do this, as while the engine is out I'd like to do some other jobs - but ultimately, the clutch is my priority...

Also, if anyone knows of anywhere indoors suitable for a clutch change, that would be available to hire for a weekend - please let me know!!

I have done many front wheel drive gearboxes/ clutch and have never removed engine to do job, agreed they can be tight but only normally a real pain if subframe is restrictive then drop down or completly remove subframe, if garage is quoting £300 then they will not be removing engine, also agree weather is deffo a factor not to do yourself in the street.

i think if you want to do the clutch change without taking the engine out then it's not too back if you take the wheel off and have the front corner on axle stands...or you could just pull the lump out and have it on the floor to attack lol! gone for that approach stripping a mini engine and the 2.5 lump i have thats for the turbo project(which i think isn't going to happen now i'v got the 2.4t lol!)

is long way to go for you but I have indoor space and happy to help ,
have most tools what need for that job.

You should get away with doing it with the engine in place, I've done VW Golf & Renault Laguna recently and left the enging in each time, not to mention mini's and maxi's years ago, I know they didn't need gearbox out, but space in them was tight

i think theres 2 kinds of clutch on this model ones a dmf and ones a normal clutch so make sure you have the right one

agree, when last time was changed gearbox on laguna take 5h with tea break, not taking engine out

the thing i decide with WWD cars is how big/bad the sub frame is , if its not to bad then jack it up as high as you can get it and job's a goodun,

Some 406s also have Dual mass flywheels (mainly the later ones)

May be easy to take out..(not sure)

but definitely they fit back with two persons..

Things to consider.

If removing the engine then you will be in a state of having to get teh aircon re-gassed (assuming there i anything left of the aircon pipes which have a habit of rotting away on pugs)

Its a crane job (obviously) and quite fiddly.

Gearbox off will also be fiddly but, more than likely quicker (all in) and you wont be touching any of the other ancillaries!

I've only ever done 1 and it was easy enough to do with the engine in situ

I might also be able to borrow a hoist if you want to go that route, but I'd say it ought to be OK with engine in-situ.

It may be a pull type clutch which makes re-fitting a bit fiddly but no need to take the engine out. IIRC there is a gearbox bolt through or underneath one of the mounts under the battery tray or air filter. As previously said try a 406 forum.
