Italian Rugby
« on: 18 March 2009, 23:59:44 »

Taken from a posting on a sports forum

I am just back from a local mini-rugby tournament involving under-11 and under-9 teams from in-and-around Rome, hosted by URC Capitolina.

Half way through this morning's tournament - at about 11am - about ten of the Italian team from yesterday's match [against Wales] turned up, including the brothers Bergamasco, Canale, Moscato, Griffen, McLean, Sole etc.

The kids loved it (and the mums and dads) - they players signed autographs, chatted with the kids and then ... refereed the remaining matches! Now how wonderful is that and what a great advertisement for rugby in general and Italian rugby in particular.

My eldest son, Tom, now has a sock with 10 of the players signatures (alongside that of Dominguez that he picked up at a tournament last year - it is still there...).

Just think - these guys, nursing bruises, tired muscles and no doubt the bitter taste of defeat in a match that they could perhaps have won.. still managed to spend a couple of hours supporting young kids playing rugby on the morning after a full Six Nations match... I thought it was magnificent - and I know the kids too. And the final touch of actually refereeing the matches was brilliant.

Anyway, my son's team - Primavera - were soundly beaten, he twisted his knee badly - but he still has a smile on his face.

Viva Italia! The true spirit of rugby lives on!

Fair doos to them !! :y

Brilliant, whats the chances of the English/Welsh team doing that and no chance of a Premiership football team doing it. Good on them :y

Seen it alot by a number of english players.

Seems to be more to do with the local games being played where the players live.

seems that this is more the way with rugby, my local club hosts a youth festival every year, get approx 1000 kids there usually at the end of April, a few years ago had Martin Johnson, Austin Healy, Neil Back and Martin Corry as guests, they were fantastic, spent 2 hours signing autographs, and that was before being world cup winners in 2003
