Armed Forces Day - a gripe
« on: 27 June 2009, 08:20:56 »

I received this in my email a couple of days ago.

[rant]

Now this is not in the spirit (as I see it) of Armed Forces Day.  They have taken a chance for the public to show their gratitude and turned it into a money making promotion!  If this is how business see opportunities like this then I might as well break off to another country where there is less contempt for their military.  Dont get me wrong I am all about promoting sqaudie discounts but this takes the p!ss.  They should give the pint for free - no carvery!

I feel a letter to the Crown Group coming on  >:(

....are you really surprised Gaffers?

This is a clear indication of what really is going on across this country conjured up by those whose priority lies in everything commercial and the desire to make a quick buck, to the exclusion of anything deemed to be done in a selfless way and from a sense of duty.

Those of us who have served, been injured and still suffer the effects say 'no thank you, we have looked after ourselves and will continue to do so' :y

In one sense its quite fitting, its a gimmick and im afraid that I find the whole "armed forces day"thing also a bit of a gimmick. It is the idea of a government which couldnt give a stuff about the armed forces imo.
It sends them off to fight dubious wars and then denies them the proper equipment and protection to do the job they have sent them to do.
I think its more about politicians giving themselves the chance to preen statesmanlike and display a false veneer of patriotism. :(
