The EU control freaks are at it again
« on: 02 July 2009, 13:23:05 »

"EU plans launched today intending to ban all smoking in public places, including beer gardens, parks, festivals and the like were greeted by disbelief and a call to action from Godfrey Bloom MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

“Enough is enough,” said Mr Bloom. “Today six pubs will close in the UK. Part of our culture is under threat and now is the time to say enough is enough. These jumped up puritanical dictators must be told where to get off.

"Nobody pretends that smoking is a good thing, but it is legal. So why don't they come clean and announce an outright ban? Because they daren't. Making 12 million Britons criminals overnight might be gong a little too far even for them. But making them second class citizens, well it seems that is no problem.

"These bullies seem to have no truck with freedom, liberty or tolerance. Well, in that case we shall have to take it back. And if that means a certain level of civil disobedience, well, so be it.”

The EU has call definition of a public place is 'all places accessible to the general public or places for collective use, regardless of ownership or right to access. It is further recommended that “indoor” (or “enclosed”) areas be defined to include any space covered by a roof or enclosed by one or more walls or sides, regardless of the type of material used for the roof, wall or sides, and regardless of whether the structure is permanent or temporary'"

I don't think that bothers them Nick.  It is the potential loss of billions of pounds in revenue that does, especially in the existing climate.  Hence the partial satisfying of the 'only if it is good for yourself' goody, goody lobby, whilst ensuring the tax flows are unchanged by not making smoking, drinking, gambling, fornication, driving, ( you have my drift, anything that we, the people, find enjoyable!!!) illegal and have done with it. ::) ::) ::) >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Actually makes you want to give up, just so the anti brigade has to pay more tax. Then let them pat themselves on the back for a job well done  >:(

...........aah the Nick that I revel in and can walk beside once more ( civil disobedience aside ) :y :y

If there is a debate to be had about this then it's better conducted within the bounds of this country by people who are held accountable on the outcome by the electorate. :y

This is quite a bizarre subject as far as I am concerned.  I value pubs as part of our social cohesion and it surprised me that we could get away with banning smoking indoors.  I think it is commendable that so many pubs have made provision outside for smokers to stay dry and warm (no mean feat considering the 'rooves and walls' definitions).

Whilst I welcome the smoke-free air that I can now inhale indoors, the problem does seem to have moved to the open-air where all the smokers now retreat in droves (naturally).

It's like squeezing the proverbial(??) zit: if you apply pressure, someone gets covered in unpleasantness.

Banning smoking would be cruel without any form of help for those who are addicted.  I guess the argument would be that the teenagers can't be addicted yet so it would at least help them.

....it's the injury to the underlying tissue that stands to cause the real difficulty here Chris - squeeze too hard and such damage will take a long time to heal :y

Kevin this smacks of being a catch-all description of the smoking shelters that so many institutions have erected to cater for smokers driven outside.

Exactly.

When I agreed we should join the EEC (as it was then), I would never in a million years have thought it would turn into the dictatorial, unscrupulous monster that is now called the EU. Never have I been more convinced that we should leave it. Eventually, like the former Yugoslavia & the USSR, it will fall apart anyway - probably with bloodshed.  :( :(

Alright I am being clever after the event now, but I must say I voted "No" in 1975, in line with the Labour Party policy at the time. ::) ::) ;) ;)

It was during a time when I considered the Labour Party was my party, although I soon learnt how wrong I was, although on this vote they were spot on! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
