Ugh! USA in 2009 like the old Soviet Union?
« on: 25 September 2009, 00:14:47 »

This makes me feel really queasy. :(

It brings back memories of the Soviet Union, or China under Mao.

Can this really be the USA in 2009?

Yes, and in the UK today, or a couple of years ago when Tony Blair came to our village..... ::) The difference was that his sidekick, John Burton was our PE teacher at school for 3 generations... ::) ::) ::)

I think the US has been energized by the historic election of a black president so kids singing a wee song is hardly signs of an oppressive dictatorship forcing its populace to worship their great leader :y

Obama, to these kids is more of a popular, iconic celebrity than a president.....kids think hes cool - you cant buy that. i'd find it creepy if they were singing about George W Bush - that would have been odd  :y

yeah - he's got his hands full battling the right on healthcare, I'd forgive the US in as much as for us, free healthcare is the norm its not a debate - yes we can debate how the NHS should be run but no-one in any significant number really disagrees in principle to free at point of delivery health care - the US seem to see it as a huge, insurmountable problem, we just look across the atlantic, tilt our heads, furrow our brows and ask "you're the richest nation on earth and you don't get free healthcare to all?"

well except emergency procedures and a few temporary inner city clinics held now and then in football stadiums - you should watch Sicko (i know michael moore does a little stretching and bending of the facts, but the essence and thrust of his argument is rock solid - its an attack on the insurance industry and the tactics used to deny claims - utterly depressing, never mind those who can't afford health insurance - this is about people who have it) :o

From what i gather, and having never been there, there seems to be a level of patriotism that defies beleif, hopefully BHO can bring them back down to earth. Its "almost" to the point of propergander....and i hesitate to say it....almost reminiscent of German days gone by....

Ultimately i fear for BHO, in a Kennedy style....does anyone see a similarity in his situation or is it just me???

Yes and no.  There are many self-contradictory things that are American stereotypes.  I never pledged allegiance, but it never died out completely either.  Obama is a change from blind patriotism allowing Bush to go into Iraq.  At least there is something to be proud about now, but opinions change quickly in the US.

Another counterpoint, a census worker was killed in Kentucky this month as a spy for the government.  An extreme case of distrust in the goverment, but there is a decent slice of America that has very little trust in the goverment.  Just because one class of kids is plaedging allegiance doesn't mean everyone is a lemming.  ;)

I have a lot of time for the US Theo and consider it a great country, imperfect though it is - but the potential for inconsequential matters to grow beyond their humble origins has been shown on a number of occasions in recent history.......

Hysteria;

http://www.war-of-the-worlds.org/Radio/

Vindictive manipulation;

http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1769.html

Plain stupidity;

http://www.mnhs.org/library/tips/history_topics/103prohibition.html

I feel that Obama carries the potential to be one of the most divisive Commanders in Chief seen in the US - which is a shame as some sort of credibility is urgently needed after the debacle of Bush '43.

There seems to me to be a disquieting under-note with BHO I can't quite see at the moment but the unsettling nature of which, sadly, may become all too obvious in the not too distant future.

I think the honeymoon with the US electorate is now coming to an end.

I don't believe that Israel will ........ be given such unconditional support from the Obama administration as from the previous Republicans.
With Bush at the reins ...........Israel could .....and did ....get away with murder and war crimes. >:( >:( >:(
It would not surprise me ............if Israel think that a preemptive strike against Iran ....would be a good idea. >:( >:( >:(

...should they, it will be with the covert blessing of the US, I would suggest;

....and in a telling omission in the third paragraph Milliband is considering the possibility.....

As long as the kids are not all lined up in uniforms with their right arms lifted singing the national anthem we should be ok! ;) ;)

Yes, hopefully they will not be given unconditional support.  However, they still will be given firm support.  If Iran does not stop being silly, and the UN or USA do not do anything about it, then Isreal WILL strike them.
