VAT on food

I had a shop in Lidl today & i've been looking at my receipt. They list items with an A & B. A=no VAT B=VAT added. Now everything i bought has no VAT except for the Penguin Biscuits. Why would they have VAT & the other food items don't :-? The only explaination i can think of is they're covered in chocolate. Is chocolate VATable :-/
The Ginger Nut Biscuits are VAT free.

I know i need to get a life ::) ;D

Maybe because they could be classed as a take away food in a cafe and therefore are vat loaded.

Penguins,jaffa's etc are classed as cakes.Cakes are vat able but biscuits are not.
It's like hot/cooked food is vat able and cold food isn't.
There is a list somewhere on the customs website that tells you what and what is not vat able and the rates.
Why has diesel/petrol got a different tax rates before vat.

Because they're classed as a luxury item.

The Conservatives, under the Iron Lady, decided what was luxury and what wasn't. Amazingly (for a lady) sanitary towels are considered a luxury! :o :o

The reason is, because they're covered or partially covered in chocolate.
So that includes my beloved Jaffa Cakes :'(

What about jelly babies are they + vat, noticed they are a hell of a price now.....started buying Aldi own make. [smiley=happy.gif]

Go self employed and then VAT isn't a problem if you play them with their own rules  ;)
