Mackeral wars now with Iceland!
« on: 11 August 2010, 21:51:36 »

Interesting, if long article here ,on the Icelanders deciding to take three times the EU suggested quota much to Britains disgust. First they offed our money, then ashed our air space and now just extracting the fish.

Lets see the EU's teeth. I just hope they aren't milk ones.

Loved the bit about the cod wars. "but Iceland laid down its trump card by threatening to close the Keflavík Nato base, crucial for defending the Atlantic Ocean from attack by the Soviet Union. Iceland finally got its way and, after 1 December 1976, Britain agreed its ships would not fish within 200 miles of Iceland. " Don't remember being told that at the time we appeared to give in!! :D :D

Had the EU developed and maintained a credible policy for the sound management of fishing stocks then perhaps their current position on this matter would have greater traction.

That said it must be desirable to have some form of quota system in place (by agreement) to prevent over-fishing.

I suppose this will be a test of the EU's resolve - in the lack of any agreement with Iceland to control the take - to belly-up to the bar and enforce current territorial quotas.

In the present climate I suppose this isn't the last we'll see of national interest overriding international agreement.

I should suggest to our Sales & Marketing people that we design a fish-gun.

ideal for mackerel wars, or cod for that matter.

Don't get me started on fisheries policy >:(70% of all perfectly edible fish caught in E.U waters is returned dead or  dieing due to quota restriction, bye catch etc
