Not gonna argue with those sentiments at all ... which is why I choose an Omega and not a 4X4 .. and I do a LOT of towing !!!

However I would also not exceed the cars plated weight, for the reasons stated.

I've not had a "tankslapper" as you put it .. and hope never to have one .. but I have had a major "upset" that involved all 3 lanes of the motorway.. luckily for me everyone got out of the way and the rig returned to normal after about 30 seconds ....

The reason was simple .. excessive speed .. I had been powering up a long climb and didn't ease off at the top ... so was going much faster than intended on the downhill side when the "cutting" ended and a side wind hit me .. add the 2 together and the answer was frighting. .. it is my belief that had the van been overweight I might not be here .. as it was the car handled the weight and as it slowed (foot off no braking) the problem went away.....  eventually.... but those 30 seconds felt like a lifetime  :(

As I said .. laws of physics ...  :(
A tankslapper is a motorbike phrase where the forks get a weave on, i was using a little poetic licence but it seems you had the caravan alternative & dealt with it properly, ie feet off the pedals, hold the steering steady & CLENCH!!!!! ;D

I towed our Caravan with Range Rovers and never had an issue at all, thats a 4x4!!
If you tow another Omega with an Omega you certainly know its there... anyone who says different I am afraid is telling porkies...
I have not towed a Caravan with an Omega yet but will be soon enough ;)
4x4's will tow anything but more likely to tip over than a car if things go pear shaped just due to height & long bouncy suspension. Anyway, stuff that, now you've been promoted are you getting a caravan??? 8-)

I agree they are top heavy though :y

Hey fellas, sorry to seem to stir up a hornets nest with my original post about towing my van  :( :(

As I said at the start, I don't normally tow as my van is kept in storage on site. At the time of buying the van, I knew my then car (Laguna) would have broken in half using that as a tow truck ;D
Its just that when I got the Miggy, it had a tow bar, so I thought 'brill....we can tow if need be'.
However, your replies show quite clearly that it would be foolish to do so, and to this I am indebted  :y

An overweight trailer weaving will still pull an omega off course. Less likely to pull a 2.5t disco off course ;)

:-? depends how heavy the 'over weight trailer' is ..... if it's too heavy for the Disco, it'll still pull it off course  ;)  ;)  ;)

Think that is down to being able to add both axle weights together with it being 4x4.
It has actually puzzled me as the two car Classic Range Rover & Omega aren't that much difference in weight :-?

well after towing with cavs, vectras, migs,i much prefer to tow with a 4x4 i liked the disco but towing with this bighorn is cock on i dont think a car compares but itall boils down to the car being upto the job and the most important factor is having the van loaded correctly and a decent working stabiliser also as guy said earlier tyres play an important factor and the pressure being correct,to anyone who thinks a stabiliser will stop snaking it doesnt, you can never stop it happening but a good stabiliser will reduce it happening and correct a snake quickly if you know how to handle them

4x4''s are good solid load luggers & will pull any van with space & comfort. Some of them are that well kitted out you could live in them, no need for a caravan. I grudgingly accept the powers that be (who know diddly squat) have decided a 4x4 is a safer towing vehicle than an equivalent weight/power large proper saloon/estate car......
But i will never agree as they are wrong.

I find that the mig is a better tow car than my old grand cherokee, they are  very similar in weight but the mig always feels more planted on the road.I am sure that a heavier 4x4 would feel better in this respect and was probably the reason that the jeep had quite a low max permissable towing weight

IMHO the 3.0 miggy ESTATE is the best towcar I have had so far. Heavy, planted, good brakes, long, and steady with more than ample power for pulling a twin axled 'van.
Not sure what the Max permitted tow weight is, but have pulled a 24ft twin axled 'van EASILY and safely when my mates car "expired" on the way home from his holiday with HG failure. (Kia Sedona.........horrible car)
