After reading through Broocie's thread with reference to the poor lad who lost his job, I wonder if things may take a turn for the better? I won't hold my breath but........

lets hope so mate! Like many bodies the HSE was badly needed when it was first formed but over the years it seems to be constantly on the lookout for opportunities simply to justify its own existence (and jobs). Of course it is still needed as there continue to be an awful lot of idiots out there who would happily put their staff at risk for the sake of making a buck but "common sense" seems to have gone out the window. A bloke was telling me the other day that he was required to wear a safety harness that only became effective at 4m when he was only 3m up! Buy a harness that was suited to the job? Nah, too much lateral thinking required obviously ;D

It's long been an excuse to implement changes that otherwise would have been difficult. Let's face it, you can make almost anything a H&S issue.

About time. Good article until the bit about Brussels. Like I keep banging on. Most of the UK Hand S stuff originates from the UK.

We don't have that sort of nonsense in Spain.

If you want an example of how the Uk interprets the Eu it is Road safety. Try and reduce road deaths in each member coiuntry in the EU. Spain introduced mandatory carrying of at least two yellow jackets to be used if you get out of a car at the side of the road. UK interpretation. Introduce zillions of speed cameras.
