too true
« on: 20 October 2010, 11:43:47 »

We're "broke" & can't help our own Seniors, Troops, Orphans, Homeless etc.

In the last month we have provided aid to  Haiti , Chile, and  Turkey, Greece,Pakistan .

Our pensioners living on a 'fixed income'
receive no aid or get any breaks while our
government and religious organizations pour
Hundreds of Millions of ££££££'s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

We have thousands of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.

Great Britain a country where we have homeless without shelter,  children and adults going to bed hungry,
elderly going without 'needed' medication, and
mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc.
YET....................
They are requesting donations for the people of  Pakistan

TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding,,

doctors and medical supplies.

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT*  gave 'US'
the same support they give to other
countries.

Sad isn't it?

yes and no...

bothered to respond because coz that sounded awfully Nick Griffin Esque,.....

just because one might have problems of one's own...  that doesn't preclude you also helping others.

this applies from the personal level to the global.

just look at the help many here give freely and without hesitation to other members,   despite , often being up against the wall , or close to it,  financially, or time wise....

if a nation is full of such individuals, why would they not want their government to behave in a similar fashion?

Agreed. If you think we have too many "homeless without shelter" you should try travelling a little more widely.  :(

I suspect if we look at the total percentage of  aid / benefit payments made versus those to other countries it would be a drop in the ocean.

I am actually in favour of reforming the way we deliver aid and should insist on more accountability - this is important for many businesses and therefore employement, food safety, stability, peace etc. The way aid is delivered today and not monitored has lots of consequences and does not address fundamentals. I don't agree with a lot of what you say but I do agree in part. The way children, in need of love and care, are left with abusive guardians or shunted around unsuitable and uncaring fosterers, is a disgrace. My wife comes home with some dreadful tales about the inadequacies of our social care system and my heart breaks when I hear about these poor kids.
Lots more money needed and, I'm sorry, that's more important to me than foreign aid.

We provide foreign aid to China and India - why?? :-/
I am all for trying to eliminate the starvation and deprivation in Africa, but until we can find some way of stopping tin pot dictators from diverting the aid away from the needy, to themselves and their cronies, Im afraid we are in many cases throwing good money after bad.
Dont pretend to know what the answers are, but they are serious problems imo.

From the highlights on the Conservative Home website:

Britain has the largest structural deficit - £109bn - in Europe. We are paying £120 million in interest every day on servicing the debts left behind by Labour's Decade of Irresponsibility.

Aid budget will grow by 37% over next four years. Britain will be first major nation in world to spend 0.7% of national income on fighting global poverty.

Yes, we're poor, so we'll give more money away.

I have, and in certain circumstances, still would, but to be increasing the aid budget at a time like this is a questionable decision imo.
