A worthy reason for all officers to have CS spray or arms. this isnt a console game.

this "little johnny" dint threaten, he attacked, with lethal intent, if that was the states he would have a new ventilation hole in his head. and the public would be thankfull for it.

Taser was invented for that reason I believe...?

Non lethal,  but stops them nicely. Provided your ready for the attacker of course.

But the do good bregade have said the taser is cruel or some such. Oh well, just shoot them dead instead then. No cruelty there at all is there. Shoot with a taser, that's cruel. Shoot them dead, oh yeah, that fine.  >:(

I think the general issue of firearms will happen sooner rather than later as the days of the office of constable carrying sufficient reason alone for the general public to respect the institution are rapidly disappearing.

At the very least each individual officer will need a firearm to provide an immediate response to any situation that demands it - there's no point responding after the fact.

I’ve carried firearms from day one of my service and as I collect my pension next year at age 60, that has been for most of my adult life (since age 21 counting military service)

I could not have done by job effectively without firearms and I certainly pity the uniformed officer working a beat without recourse to their back-up.

While the officer injured in this incident may not have had time to deploy a weapon to prevent injury or discharge of his duty, at the very least, he should have had the option.  I am aware that a PCSO was also injured.
