I spent 5 years living Paris (self-imposed exile following the election Nuew-liebore) and if I had known you were going I could have given you some pointers.
WRT the food I disagree with many of the comment above. Although UK cuisine has come on leaps and bounds in recent years there are some things only the french can get right. I never once had a bad meal in Paris. I personally am very found of oysters, indeed along with some Ricard they were the perfect hangover cure pre-rugby match. I highly recommend Canard confit if you ever see that on the menu especially if served with garlic potatoes (pommes de terres a l'ail) And the most memorable was a warm yet raw shoulder of beef served only with sauces and shared between 6 of us.
The french are generlly misconstrued by our stereotypes, in fact many Brits confuse the French with Parisians. The latter being vile, disgusting, arrogant, english-hating, social psychopaths, while the former are generally very nice, friendly and like the english. The last point is especially poingient if you make an effort to speak the lingo regardless of your sucess at doing so.
In my many years in Paris, I had a large number of french friends yet only one was from Paris. I was his first ever English friend as the stereotypes were knocked away, oh that and his right wing Le Pen activist leanings
