......... Deltics make a comeback http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13592652

What, with Steam brought back in the winter to tow out modern trains stuck in the snow, we appear to be going 'rail retro'

Saw this on TV this morning. What a beauty.  :y

I wonder what other treasures the owner has?

Lol, no.

Although I have met Martin a few times (the owner) and have traveled on that unit at ELR.

Its a very nice unit but stands him at many 100K's cash wise.

I have to say, I cant think of a more unsuitable loco for freight use!

But yes, locos are in such short supply they are even reconing some 60's!

Crazy isn't it. I seem to remember that there was a graveyard full of them near sheffield as you went down the M1, but I am talking when my son was about 15 (1992 ish). He really loved the Deltic style. I do like them, but as someone who grew up with Steam in the 50's, I never really 'took' to Diesel. My Ian Allen combine was pretty blank in that section.

They were generaly kept at Doncaster.

An odd unit with a pair of complex (but interesting) engines which are know to fail (pretty sure both have been re-built in Martins with one having thrown a rod).

I do like the diesels but that is because they are more interesting from an engineering perspective and way more complex (plus you dont spend 80% of your time having to clean them!)

Amazing to see these back in commercial service!

The engine (IMHO) is an absolute work of art http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napier_Deltic - shame they got the animation a little wrong but still worth a look.

I wonder how much the owner is getting for the hire - hope he gets something like enough to pay for the next rebuild.
