LPG certification/sign off
« on: 09 December 2010, 12:32:36 »

Hello, if I were to fit LPG to my car, would I need it signed off or certified by a "qualified person" to make it legal for the road? What documentation or official stuff would I have to do?

I obviously would tell the insurance company but is there anything else? Thanks

You can get a UKLPG agent to inspect and sign it off but it is not required for it to be legal for the road. it might be mandated by your insurance company though.

Wow that is frighteningly or refreshingly simple depending on how you look at it! I bet there's some right bodge jobs about if that's the case! Thanks for letting me know Kevin.

Hi Geoff, you need to inform DVLA that the car is now dual fuel, also as you mentioned, your Insurers who will almost certainly insist on seeing the LPG Installers Compliance Certificate. This is where you may have a bit of trouble as the LPGA (the installers governing body) has changed the system & Certificates are no longer issued. Instead, the Installer gives you a Company Headed letter stating that your vehicle has been converted by them & meets the needs of COP11 (Installation Regulations) & has been entered onto the National LPG Conversion Database which all/most? Insurers subscribe to. The trouble is a lot of Insurers don't seem to know what the left hand has told the right hand & will refer the matter to their Underwriting Dept. who usually aren't aware of the changeover either! so as said you may have a bit of a faff on, on the other hand you may not!  ;)
Should you go down the route of installing a system yourself, you would need to find a LPGA Installer willing to inspect your system & issue that letter & put your car on the National Database. My system cost me £100+vat to be inspected after I installed it in June this year. There are excellent guides on here if you decide to go down that route, & lots of help available from the members who have already done their own  :y

Not all insurance companies require Registration/Certification but the DVLA should be informed.

Yep... Most of them have been installed by "Professionals"! :o >:(

I have seen/repaired or generally tidied up many "professional" installations. So far I have only seen one that I would have been happy with... Entwood's :y But he did pay in excess of £2k for it :o

DIY installations are generally tidier and better than "professional" ones because it's your own car ;) ;)

:-[ :-[ There is a lot of help available on here. There are now several of us who have gone down the DIY route and, as Phil (and others) will confirm, I am more than willing to help out in any way I can... Even with a phone call at about midnight to try and help!

Thanks philrich and lazydocker, some very useful info there. I wonder if a letter with the company letterhead is designed to try to stop DIY installations? Or is that just cynical of me!?!? I'll have to try and find someone to sign it off if and when I decide to install it! Does anyone know when the tax on LPG will be raised to the like for petrol and diesel therefore making LPG conversion economically unviable? Do you have any recommendations on kits? I have heard stag kits are good but which kind?

Thanks all!

Note - you don't get a certificate any more, UKLPG register it on a database, in a similar fashion to the insurance database.
