Oh dear, nostalgia strikes
« on: 14 May 2011, 01:29:39 »

All the older guys who have seen cars progress (regress ?) will remember the way Kit Cars were, long time ago, built from raw materials, in a garage or front room etc !.

I was  browzing and came across this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LOTUS-ELAN-PLUS-TWO-2-LOWER-REAR-A-FRAMES-/220780314605?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3367883fed

From the look, its been made by welding up sections of box with a couple of round sections. None of this having to buy Fiat roll bar bushes fixed to the roll bar crap.

Back in the good old days, the favourites were Triumph Herald chassis or Beetle floor pans, or if really adventurous you got a load of box section and started welding  :-? :-? :-? .

There were a few competant engineers who designed Chassis for high power machines, like the Cobra Viper chassis designed by Ken Cook, and "borrowed" by another company.

I wonder if the modern equivalent would be to buy a Corsa, and cut the body off, leaving the floor pan and weld a new body/shell onto it. The floor pan is also used by Fiat so parts are easily availably. So if you wanted to build something different today that seems a good place to start

Now the Wife's Corsa, hmm, where's me angle grinder

yep done it meself on 4 occasions!!

started with a hustler beach buggy, which soon found itself wearing a 2 litre transporter engine, big step from a 1300 !

then a eagle jeep, designed for a pinto but got a 3 litre v6 with an overdrive box, weighed nothing, went like no jeep ever did before, actually won a trophy at stoneliegh drag races!!!!

then a Nova, ford powered loads of fun but not an everyday car then, now? yes please!!!

last was a Karma very very col now but at the time it was just another ferrari copy and very very frowned on, was fun though as long as you didnt care what people thought!!

however nowadays you cant cut thebody ff anything as it then requires a bva or an sva the damned paperwork and hassle just aint worth it!!!
