Caravan

I have heard about a mod that can be fitted to the caravan wheel before the tyre goes on, I think they were called Tyron bands, any of you caravanners out there had these fitted.
Apparently they stop the tyre coming away from the wheel as they dont allow the tyre to collaps into the wheel rim.

I think the cost is something like £90 for the pair.

Here you go Miggy. Loads of info here.

I think my van has got them, I got a receipt for them with all the gear the van came with. I suppose I might find out one day when I get a puncture. :(

I have them on mine and no extra charge when I had new tyres fitted last year - just a lot of swearing by the fitter ;)

I agree with extra safety where ever you can especially when towing.
I always thought that the original reason for the fitting of Tyron band was because trailer/caravan wheel rims didn't used to have a safety rim (I can't remember the technical term) on the wheel and in cornering the sideways action of the caravan could possibly roll the inside edge of the tyre into the centre of the wheel rim causing massive sudden pressure/air loss. Caravan wheels as far as I know are now the same design as a car's (having just looked, my 'van is) and are as such extremely unlikely to be pushed sideways into the centre of the rim. http://www.caravantalk.org.uk was discussing the same topic a week or two back and one member was so convinced that he had them fitted to his 4x4 too. As far as I am aware you'd only fit Tyron bands to a 4x4 if you were off roading with just a few psi of air in your tyres. Perhaps he just had a lot of money he wanted to spend!  ::)

It never ceases to amaze me how many caravans are running around on car tyres!!! i put proper commercial tyres on mine and it tows and handles so much better, and they will still be going strong when the caravan is scrapped!!!

Cos to a lot of people 1 black round thing is pretty much the same as the next black round thing. A bit like V rated against Z/W rated tyres. ::)  ::)

Totally agree, mine are NOT car tyres, again you can never be too safe.
