As some may remember, I had a breakdown a couple of months back, and had to get a replacement ECU and immobiliser fitted by the Dewsbury dealers. The car felt rougher after they had finished, and as I was passing Notts, I took the opportunity to vist Mark DTM and get him to 'lay on hands'. One of the first things he noticed was that despite their claims that they would reprogram the ECU with the most up to date software, Evans Halshaw didn't bother. The main ECU still thought it had a manual gearbox

which meant it was as it left the donor car. He updated the software on the engine ECU, the gearbox ECU and the air con, and enabled cruise. Driving the car home it felt as if I had a new car !,

the engine was smoother, the tickover was lower, changes seem more repeatable, the air con is less 'frantic' quieter and less noticable than before. You know that feeling you get when driving a new car for the first few weeks, you are getting to know everything and enjoying the ride, well its like that ! . Cruise is fun, you sit back and just cruise !. Just thinking, if I coupled the steering up to the GPS, and fitted a collision avoidance radar, I could let the car drive me home, while I sit in the back reading a book!.
A few notes about dealers.
1. Just because they say 'its the main ECU at fault, and will cost £650 to replace' doesn't mean that it is. It means they don't really know what is wrong but should be able to figure it out for the money.
2. Just because they say they are going to have to reprogram the ECU, doesn't mean they actually will. It means they will have to connect up Tech 2 and press a few buttons till something happens, else see 1.
I think part of the problem is cars are too complex for many garages. The original diagnosis was that the ECU was faulty, well Mark, being logical, deduced that it was something to do with the immobiliser and transponder chip, and the ECU was probably OK. Anyway, all's well that ends well.
Thanks again to Mark DTM for his work,

Cheers Ken
