cost of V6 cambelt change?

Hi,
I've contacted a few local garages for prices for a cambelt change on 98 3.0 V6. :-/
The first didn't want to know, said it was too much of a hassle. :o
The second, whilst on hold while he checked his book, was mumbling summit like 'jees what a b'stard job - sheer 'kin joy'. Anyway he quotes around the £300 quid mark. Needless to say I won't be letting him near the car even if he quoted £30. >:(
The third, however, says £275 for vaux parts or £230 non vaux. :-?
Does this sound a reasonable price to you folks?

Buy the parts yourself and if your not confident to do it yourself then pm jamesv6cdx and get a price from him, bet you will save loads of dosh and be sure of it being done correctly to boot. buy the whole kit NOT JUST THE BELT AS IT IS THE ROLLERS THAT FAIL. best regards Gary.

Yes, cambelt, tensioners best purchased as genuine vx parts. Dont go non vx parts.

There is a DVD available - made by some of the guys on here - available for £3 ( pm member robin hood) borrow/ hire genuine v6 locking kit and jobs a good `un to do it yourself.

If you decide however you dont want to do this the £275 quote is good, providinig its not just the belt.

This is not a difficult job so i despair of garages 1 & 2  ::)

The Contitech cambelt kits seem pretty good, not had trouble with the belts and the indlers, tensioners etc are the same as the genuine parts.

In fact I feel there better as they have the bloody markings on them unlike the gen stuff does!

Its a difficult job because it can't be completed with a hammer and a large screwdriver ;)

I think 275 is ok IF they are using the proper timing kit (1 and 2 definitely are not)

Don't Conti supply GM, my new aux belt (bought from GM) is made by Conti.

Which oulets sell the Conti brand??? I always thought Gates were good as they supply alot of OE stuff :-/

They used to be listed on Ebay occasionally, for about £65, but I haven’t seen them for a while.

£275... ouch.. I charge £60 + parts for a V6! :P

Not sure I'd be able to do it pronto though

If you're mechanically minded, or fancy a go, get the DVD, it's excellent, and do it yourself :)

the GM kit is about £90 + VAT, but the last few GM ones I've seen have no markings, which is a bit naff....

Have a watch of the DVD, then decide if you can do it.

You WILL need a locking kit - cannot be (properly) done without...
