EWL and MPG
« on: 11 December 2006, 10:44:52 »

I have an X reg 2.2 estate that has the engine light coming on now and again. It also has poor MPG mid 20's. I know there is a small hole in the exhaust just before the lambda sensor which is annoying as the rest of the exhaust is brand new! Am I right in thinking that the hole would affect the MPG and could cause the engine warning light to come on? What sort of MPG should I be getting from a 2.2 manual as I have only had the car a couple of months?

I will be fixing the exhaust this week so maybe I'll just wait and see but any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I remember the 2.2 being about the same as a 2.0 and my 2.0 gets about on petrol not gas about 35mpg around town and about 42mpg on a motorway long trip.

Just did alittle working out and its alittle lower than stated more like 32mpg around Town and 38mpg Motorway

Hope this helps

A hole in the exhaust will make the car run rich and throw a lambda sensor fault code.....so the hole needs fixing even if its only a bit of exhaust bandage and a jubilee clip.

Error codes from lambda sensors can make the car drink a lot of fuel.  Clearing error codes every time you start the car may recover the MPG, but is a major PITA.

you should be getting more than mid 20's out of a 2.2

But it does depend on what kind of runs you are doing, on the motorway @ 80 i easily hit 35mpg... around town it drops though... over a whole tank i tend to average 31/32 mpg according to the trip comp, which is around 420 to a tank.

Thanks Guys, What a rapid response!  ::)

The best I have had is 27 on a long run on the motorway so it does look like the hole could be causing the issue.

Thanks for all your comments

The exhaust probably needs replacing anyway, but could bodge something together to see if it cures problem...

I suspect by the engine light you mean the emissions light (piccy of engine) which will be caused by the hole in the exhaust if it right before the lambda sensor

Dodgy.

Auto or manual box. My 2.2 has an autobox and gives low 20's around town and 29 - 32 on longer runs- and 18 - 20 when towing Nowhere near the sort of mpg I got from my 2.0 manual  30 around town 35+ on long runs  Even towing brought high 20's

Hi All,

Just checked the exhaust. It is brand new from just behind the cat backwards. The cat and manifold look fine however there is what looks like a woven mesh covered flexible joint which is where the leak is coming from. Some of the mesh is not attached at end. Is this part a separate replaceable item ?

It is a manual BTW

I am guessing you mean the mesh section midway on the cat.

Means you need a new cat if the mesh is knackered.

I am sure someone else will be able to comfirm my thoughts.

flexi joint and  can be replaced IF exhaust next to both ends is solid .Go to a decent exhaust /cat shop. Had mine done 12 months ago £85 + VAT     bit cheaper than a new CAT assembly
