If you are doing the helicoil on the plug thread, a maintenance guide would be appreciated...

I'll be trying to do it.... whether I'll succeed or not is another matter ;)

OK, about the tang . . .

The helicoil is a coil of wire like a spring.  At one end of the coil the wire bends and crosses the diameter.  The insertion tool has a slot in it that this 'tang' fits into.  That is how the coil is wound into the hole, tang end first.  Then you have to snap off the tang to make room for the bolt (spark plug).  It is easy to break off, it has a notch cut so that it breaks easily.

The challenges here are not dropping it and general access to the hole.  The cam covers make it harder to reach in there.  If you can find really long needle-nose pliers that will reach down in the cylinder with the cam covers on then you are halfway there.  You also need to be able to run the tap, which is the other half of the depth problem.  The insertion tool is plastic, you can find a way around that issue.

Use thick grease to catch as much as possible, including on the pliers to catch the tang.  It should also be retrievable with a magnet, but not sure if you can get the angle since it will slide to the bottom side of the piston.

Helicoils are OK, but IMHO are better suited to things that are bolted up afterwards and left alone, these are better http://www.wurth.co.uk/catalogue/pdfs/UK-CD_04_6023.pdf I have a set of M4 to M12 that became part of a redundancy package  ::) but I believe they are not cheap.
They are a solid insert that you Locktite in, helicoils can have a tendancy to unwind out of the hole.

Oooh, puuurty!  :y

If you had the heads off, that defo looks like the way to go.  I agree with what you are saying, but since I'll probably never change the plugs again and you get a bunch of helicoils in a pack that's still the way I'd probably go.  Those do look nice though.
