Headlight adjuster
« on: 02 May 2007, 13:09:53 »

OK.. some of you may remember i have broken headlight adjuster in my HIDS..causes it to wobble about..

I bought a hid unit of ebay £40 only to find that adjuster was broken into 1 million pieces and totally un repairable.

so.... bought another (projector) non hid this time... they are the same unit (just different fitting and electrics for the HID) £35

Guess what...that adjuster is broken too... not as many pieces so may be able to fix it...

Question 1. what is the best glue for hard plastics? needs to be quick like super glue...but stronger?
Question 2. after all this i assume you cant just buy the part from VX? saw a part number in this one 147 756.. can someone check this part number for me see if i can buy one!

Thanks

Dean

Had both adjusters go on my old CDX. VX do not sell them seperately had to buy two new projector units.

I use Araldyte superglue, fast and strong, glues about anything.
Not used it for this exact application though.

Ok... i have managed to get it glued and reinforce.d.. its back in the headlight and so far is holding...

Will try to fit the headlight tonight or tomorrow.

Used Araldite super glue +... its a dual mixture thing ... pretty strong.

a few pictures to show the finished job... looks a bit messy but if it works i dont care.

Mine just failed it's MOT on alignment on both headlights.  Ordered a pair of new ones from ebay, still not arrived. >:(
In the meanwhile in the hope of getting a pass on a quick retest, i borrowed the headlights from my Dad's omega, fitted them and took the car for a retest.
Serves me right.  Both of his are FUBAR'd.  So still no pass, and had to go and break the news to my Dad.  That is 2 omegas with all 4 adjusters shattered.

I was told by the garage that does my MOTs that adjusting the headlights is one thing that they are permitted to do under their regulations

The headlights on my kit car go out of alignment on a regular basis. The following has got me through every MOT so far.

I park the car on a flat surface leading up to a wall (back wall of my garage is perfect). Aim the headlights on dipped beam so the top edge of the beam looks about right  (level, kicking up to the left hand side). Then roll the car backwards and forwards while watching the beam. The edge should move down slightly when rolling further away from the wall, but only slightly.

I'm not sure how this relates to HIDs which presumably have the levelling system but if there is a manual adjustment this should set the correct baseline for the auto levelling to work from, as long as the levelling system is happy and isn't dropping the lights due to a fault.

Dean, I managed to recover a set of adjusters that were completely shattered. I glued them up as you have but the plastic was very brittle so didnt have much confidence in it.
So I roughened up the inside of the 'box' bit with a Dremmel and de-greased it, then wound in a long, well oiled screw all the way to the bottom then filled the box with araldite and let it set. Carefully removed the screw then ran a tap in to ease the thread a bit. As insurance I roughened up the outside surfaces and applied a layer of araldite wherever possible.
Dont forget to apply a little grease to the adjuster threads.
