Steering Column.
« on: 06 May 2007, 00:03:49 »

Is there a way to lubricate the steering column without dismantling the front end of the car.

Mines tends to make a squeaking noise, and it is a rubbing sound from the column and I can feel it through the
steering wheel.

Given that its drive by wire, I believe in the 2.2 2002 model, I can only see it as a dry column....

Not sure about the steering wheel lubrication, but Drive-By-Wire only relates to the accelerator pedal, the steering mechanism is the same as on Omegas of old...

The sqeaking noise may well be coming from the airbag clock-spring ( also known as the steering squib)that is housed behind the steering, maybe easier to remove the column top cowling and have a good listen around there whilst wiggling the steering , it's quite a common thing on cars with steering wheel air-bags . If you don't find it's this then you could try loosening the column bolts then turn steering from lock to lock a couple of times to centralise the column then re-torque the bolts back up and see what happens.
Cheers pete

Why? aeroplanes have it... which includes most Airbuses and the Boeing 777....

Also, new Mercs have Brake-by-Wire... your hitting the brakes triggers a switch which is actually a software request for the relevant ECU to please stop the vehicle...
