water level
« on: 05 June 2007, 13:12:14 »

Have recently flushed entire water system through and refilled with the correct 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze..did this at weekend and bleed system and all seemed fine..checked level yesterday after my daily 120 mile drive and level spot on ..have been out today and driven only some 20 miles..being suspicious checked water level agin and foun I need to add about 1/2 pint to come back to level...have found that most weeks after my usual 700+ mile work commute that need to add similar ammount or some times a fraction more....never had heating issues nor had low water level light display but is it just a fact of any system that a small amount of coolant will require replacing as thought that pressurized systems were leak proof???

The V6 can develop a few small and insignificant water leaks, mainly around the stat housing, oil cooler plate or rear coolant block seal.

If its this small then dont worry about it unless you are bored one day and want to put it right.

But, do top up with a 50:50 mix and not water as this will dilute the antifreeze over time......I suspect its this slow dilution of the coolant that causes most oil cooler failures!

my 2ltr had a simular problem and found this to be the hbv (non oe equipment) which was faulty from new and gave up big style the week after getting back from a 800 mile round trip to france, it went after 2500 miles sent it back to auto vaux for a full refund and paid for an origanol one from vaux main stealer, what i did notice was that there was a smell of hot coolant after a run where the engine got very warm and you could hear air being drawn into the expansion tank ( a bubbling sound) once the engine was switched off, your problem might be the start of a hbv failure, dont mean to add doom to your day but thats what happened to me

As at this stage, loss is minor so will just keep an eye- on it.Seems that HBV is the weak link in the chain so if have spare time will replace if can see any evidence from that area.Have mixed up top up bottle of 50/50 with same antifreeze so will take advise of not weakening the solution....why does the weaker solution damage the oil cooler ?is it the chalk etc in water??...don,t have any smell issues from coolant..remember that sickly smell when heater matrix gave up on last mega

The antifreeze has anti corrosive additives in it......dilute them down and their effect is significantly reduced.....they also fail with age.....

No additives = corrosion of metal sections i.e. water jackets and oil cooler!
