High idling on 1st start
« on: 14 June 2007, 20:12:47 »

Recently when I start the car for the 1st time that day it will idle between 1000-1200. It does this for around 5 ins before settling to 500, or by the time i get to the traffic lights 1/2 a mile away.
For the rest of the day it will start and settle immediately at 500 rpm.

Would ICV make this a permanent  issue or does it's failing begin like this? Maybe I should add that the exhaust centre sections are like a string vest at the moment, just 2 more weeks til new ones.

Sounds like the car is now doing what it perhaps should have been doing all along by holding the revs at the thou/1200 mark until it warms then drops to 500 or so.

The Idle Valve is easily cleaned with a shed load of carb cleaner.  Its on the right side of the v6, near the oil filler.  Hoseclip and a spring electrical connector to release then its out.  Remember to giive it a few drops of light oil like 3-in-1 before you refit.

Is your car an auto? if so have you noticed that it holds onto each gear longer when started from cold if so this is normal to warm the cats up quicker and improve emmitions

It is a manual. I did service the ICV about 2 months ago. Only been doing it for about 2 weeks. It almost like an automatic choke, as H21 says idle high until warm and then settle.
Well if it is normal behaviour then I shall not worry. :y

Mine idles reasonably high for the first few mins, then drops a lot. Most Meega's I've owned do this. If the breathers, throttle bodies and ICV are clear, and there are no fault codes or undesirable symptoms to go with it - I wouldn't be concerned :)

Could be a slight air leak on an intake pipe,  there's plenty to check!!
