Never having done one before I'm inclined to take the easiest route, but I'll start by taking off the plenum and see what can be achieved from there. The bad weather is not only dampening my spirits but I would be wary of removing the scuttle and letting the rain get everywhere because I HAVE to do the HBV tomorrow, despite the weather.
Is there anything else I should be checking for around that area, apart from perhaps split pipes etc?

Might be a hassle doing that with the scuttle on, Im sure I'd have just lifted the plenum and left the scuttle alone if it looked like I could do it that way.   When doing mine, I found some of the vacuum piping was perished and replaced that while I was there.

Just finished doing this, and I elected to take the plenum off first, and didnt see much benefit to taking the scuttle off as well. Clips as always were a bit of a nightmare to start with, but I got there in the end.
Didnt see any obvious signs of damage or wear to the old valve tho I guess there wouldn't be anything to see anyway. All back together now, and had it running for a minute just to see if there was any immediate sign of leakage. So far so good......
