Never rains but it pours!
« on: 15 July 2007, 17:17:49 »

After a load of work a few weeks ago, including cam covers
Water Leak back again :(
Did at least pass it's MOT on Friday...

Today, driving along, car had just got warm, and whats that coming through the air vents.....Smoke.

Pulled over, and there is more coming from passenger side of the bonnet.

Opened it up, and it looks like the cam cover is leaking oil onto something hot and smoking like a goodun!

Now the car needs some pretty major looking at, how is it from a safety point of view at the moment?  is it ok to drive, or likely to go on fire?

So pretty obviously the gasket needs 'looking at'  as it is only a few weeks old, and genuine, is it ok to assume good, or should I replace it again?  I know they were sealed well, but don't know about torqued correctly?

Was told the breathers seemed ok.

Safety wise, breathing in burning oil fumes is more of a risk than fire etc....

It was a friend who is a mechanic, so know's what he's doing.

At the mo normally works on Suzuki's, Alfa's and Subaru's

He is normally good, but I know time has been against him lately and he doesn't seem to know Vauxhall's as well as some.

Not really, but I supply the parts and he is VERY cheap anyway, it just the time issue, he had it a good 6 weeks last time

If you want it done properly, why not have a crack yourself?

With the water leak as well, it is beyond me, I am starting to try and have a go, I nearly gave up and called for help on the HBV!

I have the old halfords set, but this is just too much, btw did you see me drop the CDX off axle stands at the lakes?  :-[

Ah, but was that on Mark's 'hair trigger' jack ;D

Sorry, missed the bit about the coolant leak? Do you know where from?

Mark's jack wasnt actually touching the car at the time :(

Water leak, who knows, oil cooler been done, thermostat replaced before I had the car, so maybe hose, maybe coolant bridge, I don't know.

bit more about it in 'MOT day tomorrow' thread in general chat.

If the oil leak is on the passenger side then first check that the leak is not coming from the oil filler neck. If the seal was not replaced when he did the cam cover gaskets then this can leak and oil dribbles down on the hot exhaust plate.

Gotta use genuine VX gaskets, others are sh1te....  I found out to my own expense, also black sealent for the corners,,,,,

If VX, gaskets may still maybe under waranty.. if fitted correctly..  also were the breathers cleaned?????

Any other jobs whilst its in bits......drivers side manifold gasket ok (I will strip down to the water pipe etc so if it needs doing its only an extra hours work).

Thanks, and much appreciated, if only I could have got some practise in on smaller jobs, then maybe I could have a go, but if my mechanic can't do it, then i've no chance!

It's at the stage where I want to start saying have you done it like this, to that torque etc, but as he is the Mechanic, i just have some theory knowlege from here, really dont want to sound like I'm teaching him his job, cos he could just turn round and say if you know so much do it yourself, and I really dont want to burn bridges.

I'll have another peer at the engine later, and try and confirm where the oil was from.

Had another drive this morning, smoky after about 1 mile,
Certainly looks to be cam cover area to me, oil filler looks clear.

Do you want me to get any parts before you have it, or shall I leave some cash with you to pick up what you need as you discover it?
Looks like being Camcover and coolant leak as the main jobs.
If you can just give it the Marks DTM treatment and keep an eye out for anything else.
Multiram, never worked, but I should have replaced the front vac tank by the time you get it, when I put in the new HID bulbs.  So with a bit of luck it will do.

Just let me know what you want to do and I'll fit in.
Train tickets not to bad from you to me, £15-30, so thats another avenue if I struggle for lifts / babysitters etc.
(reminds me of the old 'Tunes' ad, "Ill av a thust ass ikit oo ottingham"   LMAO

Cheers
