No lights on..is someone home?
« on: 17 July 2007, 21:46:58 »

Do you agree with my reasoning?

Started mega and set off for work. Battery/ignition light coming pulsed on then off along with light next to it with engine running. Engine able to rev but no speedo or tacho. Switched off engine, turned on ignition now no battery charging light. Engine starts but no tacho or speedo.

Checked out battery voltage and shows 12.45v with engine off, 11.4v with engine on. So thinking alternator shot. Have checked connections at rear of alternator for tightness, all o.k.

Does any one of you good peeps know of a sorce for parts for a 100 amp 14v alternator. Only motor factors around here will exchange knackered alternator for 'refurbished one'.

Thats what I thought but as I have said no one up here will sell just the bushes. Any idea where I can get some if they are gone?

I'd check the fuse that feeds the instrument panel before you take the alternator apart. This will cause no feed to the ignition light, meaning it lights in the opposite sense to what it did before.

The alternator may not self excite without the current through the bulb, hence no charge.

Could well be the alternator as well, though, and the gauges just giving up ddue to low battery voltage.

Then again you could always try looking for a repair speclalist n your area that repair alternators and starter motor's, cheapest option. Either that I have an alternator here but just needs a new regulator.

Sounds like alternator gone given the voltage readings.

You can get a reg/brush pack here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12-volt-regulator-for-internal-fan-Bosch-alternator_W0QQitemZ300112630299QQihZ020QQcategoryZ36631QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

And if you have some bearing pullers, fit new bearings as well.

Thanks everyone for your input.  :y

Removed cream crackered alternator and stripped down using Marks excellent How too. Found that the slip rings were nearly gone. Have tried to get a local auto leccy to repair mine but got all the same response 'can only do an exchange'. Not worth our while to refurbish just send away. :o :o

Quoted some fantastic prices locally for another alternator, I have bought complete cars for less. ;D ;D

Investigated what Kevin suggested with a blown fuse. Found that Fuse 15 (20 amp) blown. Contacted local motor factors and managed to get an exchange alt for £70. That is with a full 12 month warranty. So have bitten the bullet and ordered one. Saga looks to its end though. Hope it stops the gremlins that have plagued my motor for the last 2 months.

We are right at the start of another Summers day up here in Scotland, the rain pelting down on the pavements. :o
But I am not down hearted, fitted replacement alternator and every thing is working. Battery charging at 13.75v with every electrical item switched on in the car.

So who cares what the weather brings I am now going out for a cruse around Fife. :y

So thanks again every one for the support. ;)
