Pink Liquid Leak
« on: 30 August 2007, 10:02:50 »

I have a 2.2 CDX Auto and have noticed over the past few days a leak on the ground. Looks like it could be pinky/red in colour and oily/greasy in texture. Any ideas what this could be?

Two liquids that are pinky/red - Water from the header tank and autobox fluid.

Remove the header cap and see/feel the liquid inside and compare.  If the same, suspect a water leak from a typical source - heater bypass valve.

If different, could be from the auto gearbox.  Have a look underneath the car and look for a wet area.  If you find something, pop the results back here and someone will advise.

Auto box fluid has a very distinct smell, and should be a 'red wine' colour, though if hasn't been changed recently, may well be brown.

Coolant is like a watered down pink colour...

Cheers for your prompt replies guys. Having had a quick look, and I am by no means a specialist in the line of car engines, I would say this looks like it could possibly be coolant. I dipped my finger in the leakage on the ground and I can't remember any distinct smell. With bonnet open I could see some of the liquid on the frame down below, underneath hoses (possible cause). As you look at the car from the front, the leak is quite well forward and over towards the drivers side wheel.

coolant will be watery, oil will be.... oily.  coolant should also dry off eventually.   Is your coolant the red stuff , or blue?  (Red is better - long life).

ATF is also used in the power steering system (although Dexron 2 not 3) so could also be this. (although that's over on the passenger side).

I had a 2L and it was basically similar to the V6 - but slightly lower down - I accessed from underneath.

Dont forget Power Steering Fluid is Red/Pinkish but i doubt it would be that as you would feel your steering getting very heavy indeed
