warning noise
« on: 07 September 2007, 19:30:26 »

a noise has started today for no apparent reason.it appears to come from around the brake m/cyl area.it sounds constantly, with ignition on or off.the noise is just like a twittering bird.i've checked the fusebox but can't find anything there.also happens with the ignition key out and car locked.everything else seems to be working as normal.obviously i'm worried about the battery running down and with the wife having recently been ill,i don't want it conking out on her.any help please.

I may be wrong but that could possibly be the alarm power sounder dying it is in that area under the scuttle trim you could have a look and then if it is there disconnect the connector to it apparently the rechargeable batteries pack up on these units

Agreed, power sounder is the culprit.

Use the search button under the OOF logo on the top of the page and have a trawl of posts.  There are a few threads covering this.   :y

They are chargeable batteries, but trying to get hold of them is a nightmare and there was only one company that I think someone came across but unfortuneatly they've stopped doing them!! cost new for power sounder from Vx is around £50 mark and is probably a better bet and when I changed mine I ripped the old one apart and it had Ni-Cad Batts fitted and the new ones have Ni-mh so less chance of the memory effect  compared to the Ni-cad ones.

Perhaps the batteries are now taking and holding a charge for some reason.  Has the car been laid up for a while and just brought back into service?   :-/

Following this thread, I have just gone to take a look at mine. When my alarm goes off, all that happens is the indicators flash. Not enough to deter a would be car thief.  I took out the sounder and then connected a standard speaker from the connector using speaker wire.
This time the alarm went of and the speaker cone moved with gusto. I then wired it to the car horns, which produced the same result. So by this theory I should be able to attach any speaker so long as it is a 12v amplified :question

Would this be a suitable replacement?
