Silencing a Tractor
« on: 12 September 2007, 19:07:19 »

Of course, one expects Diesels to be a bit noisy, but is there any additive to oil that will quiet them down a tad?
Decades ago, we used to put STP into the oil which had the effect of increasing oil pressure & generally stopping tappet rattle on minis (BMC A series motors)
Would love to reduce the 'clatter' especially when cold

Regular oil changes may go some way to assisting but the inherant problem with a diesel is the way they actually work.

Sometimes the clatter you hear is a combination of the fuel injection system and the actual combustion process, rather than any hydraulic valve adjustment or clearance.

Petrol and a match?

Sorry to sound flipant - I have a bit of a hate relationship with tractors currently ;)

You could try lifter treatment - but regular oil changes probably better.

Remember, 4.5k max service interval, so oil change every 2 - 3k....
