Cam cover gaskets ?
« on: 27 October 2007, 21:09:33 »

Hi there is there anyone in the Lincolnshire area that would change my gaskets for me. I have come to the conclusion that, that is the problem.

Symtoms - Burning oil smell
                 Oil leak
Plugs pulled out, oil in the wells

I would love to have the confidence to do it myself but are bottling it!!!.

Ps - my 1996 2.5 CDX has started to run real hot, upto 100 on the gauge. I don't thrash the car and the coolnat level is fine. The fan kicks in most of the time even on short journeys. Do you think that the engine bay is getting hot due to the oil burning onto the exhaust??.
Cheers for now brothers of the Omega Clan!! :y

I think the coolant may need a bit of flushing ...

Having just done mine and cocked the car up bad style, I'd say you've made a good decision getting help. I've wasted 3 days of my life and I'm can't face it today. Good luck.

That's a fair comment but I think all that the majority on here were trying to advise in your case was that going to a dealers is no guarantee that the job will be done properly, it is simply a guarantee that you will spend £70 an hour on labour and be charged full price for all the parts.

If you get a TC you can get the parts cheaper and people on here are often willing to help or even do the job for you for a lot less.

I am in no way talented on car mechanics.......upto about 3 years ago every car i had was main delaer serviced  ::)
However since this site and a previous one i was a member on......it has given me the confidence to have a go myself on simple jobs.
I pick and choose which to have a go myself.......ie pad changes......not that difficult......i did get lost at one point about the pad sensor but asked on here and was pointed in the right direction  :y
Ive changed the front disks too  :)
I try to research as much as I can before starting a job.......ie check the maintenence guides or post questions :y
Hardest job i did was the cam cover gasket.......but i got there in the end  :y
Oh and maybe replacing the blower fan.......that took me 6 hours start to finish  :-[

Jobs im not confident on are cambelt changes......
Also my exhaust manifold is blowing at the moment......the reason has been identified and the head of engine has to come off......this again im not confident on.....so another member on here is coming to give me hand shortly  :y And also have a look as to why oil is leaking out faster than im putting it in.......ok its not that bad....im loosing about a litre of oil about every 2k miles  :( and it is leaking it......you can watch it drip  :(

The reason i started to have a go myself.......my local vx dealer had my omega 8 times trying to fix a hot starting prob and failed too  >:(
I took it to TB to have a look with his TECH2, he identified the prob as being cam sensor......and even tho the dealer had told me they had changed it......i paid to have it changed again by a local garage and suprise suprise it fixed the prob  :y
I vowed at that time never to take the omega back to a vx dealer for servicing......
Mind you if i had known then how easy it is to change the cam sensor on a 2.2 i woulda done it myself.

I have been lucky i guess......the local garage i use now and then......let you wander about the workshop and watch the mechanics do the work on your car......so ive learnt watching others and
think sometimes......blimey thats not difficult i can do that myself  :y

So between watching and helpful advice on here im getting more confident  :y

I think the answer is research and take your time  :y oh and get the correct tools for the job.

I admit my 2.2 is easier to work on than the V6's

Just my 2p worth.......if i can do some jobs then anyone can  :y
