I have just bought a 53 2.6 CDX Auto.  This week I drove from Cheshire to Edinburgh and back but the water temperature gauge never went above 80°C.  This seems low.  Is this normal?  Faulty gauge / faulty thermostat?

Did it move from the endstop? If so, probably stat.

Should read around midpoint on gauge, maybe tad tower when cruising.

Yes, it moved in the range 74-79°C.

Does it take ages to get outa the blue zone? Like 15mins or so?

My 2.2 has been hovering around the 80 mark recently, a bit lower than normal for it when cruising.....put that down to the colder weather......but it seems 4 pots run cooler than v6's......so one test to do on it you could do.....is start from cold and grab the top hose to the rad.....if it remains cold and then suddenly gets hot......after a while....then stat is prob ok.....if the hose gradually gets warm....then sounds like stat is fubared.

Personally tho i would have thought temp below 80 when warmed up.....stat is suspect.

My rule of thumb......4 pots...80-85C normal.....v6's 85-90 normal.....tho i'll bow down if anyone disagrees

My 3.2 hovers around 80-85 most of the time. Climbs up into the low 90's in traffic with the air con off, but otherwise not too far from yours.

As TD says, time to warm up is the key, along with doing the top hose check. 'stat is a bit of a pain to get to on the V6 so it pays to be sure before biting the bullet.

If it's up to temperature after 3 or 4 miles driving from a cold start I'd be inclined not to worry. Dashboard gauges aren't the most accurate devices in the world either. More of a guide to when something's going pete tong.

Mine never really gets above 80, only when towing, so normal I would say for this time of year.

Remember when quoting temps, the gauge scale varies, esp between prefacelift and facelift, hence why I normally say just below midpoint.
