Automatic transmission problem
« on: 14 November 2007, 02:21:33 »

Hello,

I am Peter from Holland

I have a question and i hope someone can help me.

I own an Opel Omega 2.5 V6 from 2000 195000 km.

Sometimes the automatic xmission gives a boink just at the moment when the xmission wants to the 3 th gear but i loosen the throttle pedal due to circumstances.
I can live ith that, but when i sellect it to sport (with the little push button) and i drive for a while, it shift gears strangely, after a certain amount of time a warning is displayed on the screen " automatic transmission" illuminates.

Allready changed oil 2 times. also the cardan

Could it be an adjustment thing, pressure sensor ??? or do you think the xmission needs  a revision?? in the normal Drive setting it shifts normally appart from the third gear i mentioned above, however the shifting is not completely soft.

exuse my english

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Hi Peter,

1) It would help to get the gearbox fault codes read

2) I'd imagine this is likely to be a failed thrust washer in the box. Can you see remains of a thrust washer in the smaller gearbox sump?

Cheers

Hi BlueV6

welcome to the forum.

What is a cardan? Is it the gearbox filter?

Thanks boys for the reactions so far

:-[ Thrustwasher where is that? is this in the aut.xmission itself, no there where no particles in the sump of the transmission, changed also the cardan oil (cardan is the small gearbox at the rear of the car)
Sometimes it looks the 3th gear is the problem, example : I start to drive than it shift to the 2nd gear , after that it will shift to the 3th gear at approx 50 km/hour but when I backup my feet from the gas just before the shifting is made, you feel a(loud) boink in the car however the shifting is made to the 3th and in mine oppinion when you back up your feet the shifting should not be made, (because it was still in the 2nd).
I don't no how to say this in english but it look like sometimes there is a hangup in the 3th gear. it should shift but it won't do it at the right moment.

I hope the story is understandable  ;) because i hope the problem can be solved, I will make a readout of the computer later on.

Thanks in advance

best regards,

Peter

Ah, so cardon is the differential then :y

I think you really need to get gearbox codes read with a computer.

i have come across this in the past.

just as the transmission is going to change gear you take your foot off the throttle and this confuses the gearbox and so it changes gear with a heavy 'clunk'

there have been a few people who have commented on this, i have noticed it happens to me when i am going up a hill and just at the gear change point i take my foot off the throttle, there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done

hope that helps

I don't get it often, and would never try and do it on purpose as i can't imagine that it would do any good

I shall try it on the tractor tomorrow (or the MV6, depending which one I use tomorrow - think tractor is at the front of drive).

My 2.2 does this sometimes too.....and it is at the point when its about to change and you lift of the throttle.....it carries on to change with a clunk (thud).....and now you have very low revs......as soon as you accelerate again it changes back

I would imagine the auto box uses the current engine load to determine how aggressively to shift. Loads of torque going through the box means that it needs to shift quickly to prevent slip. Little torque and it needs a  less aggressive shift to remain smooth. I guess if you suddenly change the engine load when it's already committed to shifting, you can probably catch it out.

Mine does exactly the same thing and more noticeable when in heavy traffic on Motorway, less so when stuck in traffic for long periods and the transmission fluid is getting hotter

Right, can fool mine into changing, but it doesn't thump particularly (tractor does a little, but probably due to the extra torque due to chipping)

Can get mine to do it and it's a little concerning (especially as the box is so smooth the rest of the time with V9 software), getting the ATF changed tomorrow so i'll see if that improves matters.
