2.5 v6 Oil Pressure
« on: 07 December 2007, 22:49:54 »

I am a newbie. Please excuse if this question has already been answered previously. I have an omega 2.5 V6 1999 (S) purchased in June 2007, 98K on clock. Recenctly the oil warning light came on and as a precaution I contacted the AA :( Technician came and advised that the oil pump had probably gone as there was some top end noise. However, the light is now intermittent and runs fine for a short while and then the light comes on and the top end noise re-appears. It can clear itself and quiet down again although it is obvious there has been some wear as it is a little noisy at the top end. AA man said about a grand to get replacement engine fitted. Car has just passed MOT and I am not in a position to re buy. Any advice would be appreciated but please be gentle as I have had to use public transport for the past week ;)
Thanks in advance.

Oil pressure, or oil level...? Oil pressure is the red light in the instrument panel panel, oil level comes up as verbal warning on the MID (Multi Information Display).

If Oil pressure, do not run the engine until the fault is fixed.

Could be just a faulty oil pressure sender, or wiring to it, and even though they don't often go wrong for the cost of £5 it is worth replacing it first and ensure the wiring is good before taking the engine front apart.

As for noise, it could be coming from the water pump or from one of the rollers/idlers, not good news by itself, but again before taking the pump out you want to make sure where the noise is coming from exactly.

If indeed the oil pump, then yes it is expensive to fix in the garage, much cheaper DIY but quite a lot of dismantling is required.

Another cause that's possible is a sticking oil pressure relief valve. I assume the oil level is OK?

Either way, it needs to be run as little as possible until fixed. An oil light normally only comes on when there's only a few psi of oil pressure, which is not enough to prevent serious engine damage.
