Strange Idle problem
« on: 30 November 2007, 23:08:30 »

Oil cooler was spewing oil and water (well ok maybe not spewing but leaking a bit) so had it changed a few days back. Since then I seem to have a weird idling problem. Most of the time everythings fine, but when I've been sat in a jam for a bit every now and then the idle suddenly drops to 300 then picks back up. This is accompanied by what feels like a small shunt from the rear. Sometimes it just does this once every few minutes, others it does it every 10 seconds ish and keeps repeating. General driving, waiting at lights etc everything seems fine.

I was thinking maybe something has got disturbed in the ICV but odd how it only happens when everythings toasty from sitting in a jam.

Any ideas before I go back to the garage ?

Cheers

Dodsy

I suspect your cooling system is still a bit clogged up and the engine isn't being cooled properly.

I find my 2.5 doesn't idle as well when the engine is very hot.

is it just the extra load of the cooling fans kicking in?

I think I now have the solution to the idling problem. Looks like the DIS might be fubar'd *sigh*. Driving along in the rain today and I get some hesitation, then a misfire feels like just 1 cylinder. Goes away with revs. *whew* thinks me just some water ingress thats cleared. A few miles later (nearly home thank god) I am suddenly driving a tractor, at least 2 cylinders missing. Then coming back. Then missing again. I was <1 mile from the garage I use so pulled straight in and left it with them. Im hoping that its just a loose lead or dodgy connection but from previous experience it felt just like a DIS pack failing. Lucky I got a warranty when I bought this old barge !
