Where the ECU on a 95 2.5TD?

I've got a 1995, 2.5TD that goes well once spooled up but is a slug pulling away. Not a problem day-to-day but I also tow a pretty heavy caravan so this pulling away thing is made 10x worse. It has been regularly serviced (5k oil) and other than the sluggish pull away is a great tow car.

I use biodiesel (proper made stuff, I make & retail processors) and it runs great, only done 125k. Running regular diesel makes little difference.

I have seen re-map chips on ebay from germany, only about £70 posted. I'm sure these have been fitted and talked about as OK on here, but I can't find any info. Has anyone done a DIY chip and what results?

I have seen the auto box and small clutch issue (this is manual) but it's not going to get thrashed, in fact I'd be easier on slipping the clutch if it pulled away well!

right hand side of engine bay in triangle shaped box is were ecu is bud ! as for remap have heard is does wonders for the bmw lump !!

Slow pulling away is likely to be waiting for the Turbo to spool up so it may be something you have to live with. A chip change will increase the boost pressure but it will still take some time (and RPM) before the Turbo generates any boost.

I'm sure someone with a chipped 2.5 TD will be along to describe how it change the performance, though.

I've had loads of Diesels, most have a bit of grunt first off. Omega is just too slow untill you get to 2000rpm then it's off!

Sounds like the chip will be the way to go, plus get a good splash of injector cleaner in the fuel filter and make sure they are all ok.

It wont do bog all for the boost pressure as the waste gate to control the turbo spooling on the BMW lump is 'crude' to say the least....in fact the actuator to open it is controlled by the pressure of the boosted air.....no electronic intervention at all.

Nope but, its a diesel.....so no need to bleed air off when the throttle shuts (coz there isnt one)....just need to prevent over boost....which it does.

Granted it won't need a dump valve but I'm surprised there's no mapping of the boost control at all. Guess it's not that critical on a diesel.

On a diesel you just get as much air in as possible and vary the fuel....

The only reason they have MAF's on the non common rail setups is so they can ensure that it doesn't over fuel and smoke.

Thinking about it I guess a relatively constant demand for air gives the boost control system an easier time than on a petrol car.

So are these engines in VX guise "detuned" just by turning down the fuel? I guess that would explain why chipping improves MPG, because the Turbo's otherwise busy generating more boost than required.

I guess that will be the limit of tuning to....unless you bugger around with the actuator.

The ECU is near battery in triangular box.

Contact Omegatoy for chips, though if you have an auto, any chipping will destroy the gearbox pretty quickly.

I have a TD with Omegatoy's chip, but have a stronger AR35 autobox.  The power comes in a little lower, and more of it, but still flat below around 1800 - 2000 rpm.  Economy up as well with the chip
