Cable tray
« on: 27 December 2007, 23:07:53 »

The Saga of the non-starting is getting deep and long .. so probably boring most folks to death .. sufice it to say I got it running today .. but with a oil-leak that means the passenger side rocker has to come back off.

Question is .... just how do you remove the cable tray as the how to says ?? For me it seems imposssible and the damned thing just gets in the way, fighting it is probably why that gasket has gone on wrong ..

Please ..   how do I give myself more room to do the job properly ??

Are you removing the wires from the cable tray?

The how to implies you remove the wires from the tray and place the tray to one side, thus getting more room.

Trouble is I can't see how to open the tray up or do anything with it .. so I'm having to manipulate the rocker cover under a solid unweildy tray with little room to see what I'm doing .. and it looks like I screwed up doing that .. :(

Yes - you need to remove the wires

Look along the top of the tray, you will see lots of little clips, where the cover goes on top of the tray. Press them in, and remove the cover. Then you can pull out the tray :)

You will need some long cable ties more than likely........ :-/

So when you snap the clips off the cable tray you can use the cable ties to hold the lid back on   ;) ;D

Not saying this is how the lid on my cable tray is held on..........ok it is  ::)

I recently did the cam cover gaskets on my 2.6l and got pissed off trying to work with the cable tray in place. Remove it as James says, but you don't have to break any of the clips. There are a lot of them, but patience is needed to gently separate the top half of the tray progressively from front to back. (You may have undone the bolts holding the tray to the plenum already). The cabling can then be carefully lifted out of the bottom half, which can also be completely removed, but note carefully the cable and plugs layout to facilitate easy and correct replacement. I used long cable ties to secure the cableing out of the way temporarily, (round the bonnet struts IIRC), and access was dramatically improved. The tray clips together again very easily if you have replaced the cables and plugs correctly.

I don't know how much progress you've made, but this may help.
When you replace the cam cover, check very carefully, (you can get a good feel of it with your fingertips), that both the '1/2 moon' parts at the rear of the gasket are properly in place and sealed. And if you are using a torque wrench, the setting for the bolts is 8Nm and no more. I couldn't believe how loose this felt, but the end result was OK. Having the cover out of the way makes everything so much easier.
And by the way, I think warping of the plastic covers is a red herring, unless they've been horribly abused in some way. They're sturdy and would need very high temperatures and massive imbalance of bolt tightening to distort them, IMO.

Update .. :)

All done by 1100 ... cable tray out of the way made a HUGE difference ..no clips split either :)

Started instantly :( and no leaks apparent. Just done a 60 mile test run.. still no leaks and most of the old spilt stuff seems to have burned off.

Might be my imagination but seems to run better and a bit quieter as well.

Must rush now .. 'van to pack .. we've turned down the Discovery offer .. away in the meega as it should be.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice, have a great new Year and I'll be back in the forum late on the 1st, and with any luck no bad news .. :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR OOF  :)

I is back ... :) and at first I wasn't sure where I was ... nice "new" site !!

Quick update ... car has run a dream for the whole holiday, started on the button everytime, not a glitch at all.. :)

Oily smell was all but gone after about 100 miles, still a VERY slight smell after towing home.. but I was pushing it up some steepish hills, so things got warmer than they have been.

I hope to be checking the plugs again this weekend, moving the oil filter around a tad to get access to the cam sensor .. not sure wether to change it or not ....  ? (no fault codes at all with engine running) ...  and if I get the chance doing some general "cleaning up" of old spilt gunge

@Martin ... The Disco loan was offered from a mate so we could still take the 'van away for the planned holiday if I didn't get the Miggy fixed in time .. well I did it with 30 minutes to spare ... :)

Good job :y

in my experience it does take a while for the old oil to burn off, so the odd whiff now and again is to be expected.

If you've got the spare crank sensor I'd change it, especially if the current one is the original with the cable routed up with the oil cooler pipes. It will let you down sooner or later, so best to pre-empt that.

... especially as you need to fiddle with the oil filter, as it won't be an easy roadside repair when it does let go!
